I may be wrong, but I would imagine that this idea is one like so many others. Noble in pronciple, but no actual execution.

I'd recommend trying out the local club before taking on any of the events. A lot of the events require you to have a rating, but some of them have sections for unrated players. Good luck.

Tell him to skip past the chess bit and start into learning poker. I've played chess most of my life and at one point was very good (by Irish standards anyway) and just recently gave the game up for good when I discovered that poker was more challenging, more fun and more lucrative.

Deffinately mentioned in Des' fantasy thread about having some place for the rulers of the world to read the times, smoke cigars, swallow brandy and maybe play chess.

He is Romanian if I remember right, and I believe they are known to be good at chess... but we are trying hard to get him into poker! when I take a trip down to visit I will surely take my Hold'em kit with me :D

Roundtower is supposed to be fairly lethal at chess. I know a few others (Goran?).

We have a chess forum here too you know.

I heard that The_Prof is an excellent player too. I'm trying to think of ways to put together a combination chess / poker event but everything I can think of is...lame.

Pft poker/chess combo is lame, what you want is the fine noble sport of chess boxing:
    http://site.wcbo.org/content/index_en.html

Since a large proportion of the winning Internet poker players come from a gaming rather than a gambling background there are loads who stated their gaming experience with chess and are very good. I wouldn't say there's many good at boxing though. So many poker/boxing combo would be in order...standard Saturday night in the S.E.
