censorship - why??

if somebody has something interesting to say, people will respond.

if people find a persons posts boring or irrelevant, the thread in question will probably just die rapidly.

but why enforce a form of crude censorship where others can decide when a thread is good or bad and close it if they deem fit?

    check here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055165828

a bulletin board which i visit on a regular basis has been down for 48 hours. i am curious as to why this has happened. is it technical? desired (for upgrade) or undesired (crash)? or possibly legal (has somebody said/done something which they shouldn't have)?

i ask a question here and the thread is closed, locked, shut down, call it what you will.

is this kind of reflex, jack-boot contraint of information common around here?

That forum wasn't the place for the question.
You got an answer, then things started to go down... or was that up :/

Anyway, wrong forum. Mod locked it. No problem.

    Move along.

so.... the only thing you can discuss here is things which happen.........here? are other forms, means, places of communication all to be blacklisted, banned and blotted out of our media?

sounds like catholic ireland in the 50's.

    Yes. Why the censorship.

doyler posts a non-sequitor. Applying the sort of reasoning one needs to use to solve crypic crosswords shows this to be a question which has no relevance to the forum he posts it in (Tech > Computers > Computers & Technology is traditionally for threads about Computers & Technology).

The only logical reason to do this is because if this were to continue unabated it would be impossible for people to use this site to communicate with each other.

doyler is trying to censor us. Why?

censorship of thoughts, ideas or comments which do not offend and have no desire to offend is ALWAYS a problem.

There's a world of difference between someone censoring what we see and us not wanting to see it in the first place.

exactly. if nobody around here knows about my query or gives a toss whether the site in question lives or dies, then the thread will die a natural (and probably rapid!) death. and in that case enforced censorship is not needed or required.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

the thread will die a natural death?

you've clearly never posted on boards before.

I will try to do so slowly, and with small words.

Your post was not about computers and technology clever boxes. It also didn't make any sense.

People are trying to use that forum to talk about clever boxes.

If there were lots and lots of posts like yours then it would be impossible very hard to find the posts which were about clever boxes.

This would mean that people couldn't talk about the clever boxes. This would make the people who own this site sad, because they want to let people talk about the clever boxes.

The people who own this site are trying to let people talk about clever boxes (and other things in other places). We call people who let people talk about things (whether themselves or other people) "publishers".

Sorry about the big word there, but there's another one coming up. When someone prevents publishers from publishing what they want, this is called "censorship".

    Almost!

Imagine boards.ie is a house and the forums are rooms in that house. Now imagine you own the house. I'm a guest in your house and I want to go to the toilet. The first room I come across is the sitting-room so I drop my kacks and take a dump on the floor.

As I'm doing so, you come into the room. Do you calmly let me continue with my rectal dump or do you throw me out of the room (forum) and clean up (lock the thread)? My guess is you throw me out of the room :)*

    That's what happened here :D

*end of lurid fantasy/educational analogy :D

Does anyone know why economics.ie redirects to a search engine/ad page?

That's libel. And against the Equality Act. And censorship of my freedumb of speech. And I'll be talking to my solicitor.

Sarcasm on boards? I for one am shocked.

We have censorship, to reduce libel, slander and to stop certain offensive viewpoints from getting this lovely place into trouble. Can you imagine life without boards

Fair dues to Doyler that at least he has accepted and taken on board what he did wrong and why it got locked etc. Thats better then about 99% of similar posts here. You pass, you can stay :):p

Ahem, now there will follow a rant on behalf of the DeVore Party.

It really really grinds my gears when people scream censorship (I'm not slateing Doyler here, I mean the others) when something like Burma is going on *right now*.

We live in the fncking Shire compared to many places in the world and for people to shout "help help I'm being opressed", particularly while the monks are being rounded up and shot over there is just sickening. You have no idea how bad things could be because, while God knows I'm well aware of the problems of being a publisher here, we dine on cake every day of the week in terms of freedom of expression compared to much of the world.

We've created and managed one of the few non-big-business, non-governmental controlled/influenced platforms in the country and we take personal (and corparate) risks to do so.
Those arent the typical actions of a group hellbent on censorship, those in fact are the very opposite.

It would be ironic and laughable were it not so serious here and deadly in other places that people come here and tar us with the word we strive against. Freedom isnt anarchy, it comes with some understanding of responsibility of its use and consideration for others around you.

    Here endeth the sermon.

    DeV.
