Help with 2 year old iBook

I recently bought a external HDD(120GB Maxtor OneTouch mini) to back up my 60GB iBook. Just wondering is there any difference between backing-up files using the accompanying software (onetouch manager) and just copying files to the HDD by clicking and dragging?

The internal HDD is nearly full and I want to erase unneeded photos etc. after transferring them to the external HDD but I want to be sure they are secure. plus I want to upgrade to leopard and be able to use time machine! any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks

Try formatting your Maxtor drive into 2 partitions of roughly equal size using disk utility, then download Carbon Copy Cloner (Shareware... very good @ US$10) Use it to copy the files you want over to one of the partitions, you will still have a partition for use with time machine. NB: Not sure how hungry in terms of size time machine is going to be but you should be ok..

I have an old Maxtor one-touch in the other room. I don't know what it's like now but the software that was included with mine was garbage and I couldn't delete it quick enough. So until you get Leopard just use SuperDuper or CCC as suggested. Dragging and dropping will work fine too. A backup program is just supposed to make things quicker and easier.

Personally I'd recommend getting another external hd and using one of them solely for backup. Get as big as you can afford. Afaik Time Machine will make full use of any space you give it to store deleted files.

Sounds like you're already running out of space and using the same hd for backup and storage just feels wrong to me... but I have a bit of paranoia about hard drives failing... :D
