My GF and I stayed in a nice place in August called theAbcone and we had a really pleasant stay. The rate was 79 (pounds sterling) per night - not quite sure if that's the kind of range you're looking for, we stayed for 3 nights and it came to 237 sterling.

Location was good - a stone's throw away from the Gloucester Road tube station. Hyde Park was close enough to the hotel as well.

Thats about right... just looking for some place cheap and cheerful but not a hole, as only need a hotel to sleep and shower as we will be out for most of the day sightseeing.

Just checked reviews for it on tripadvisor and most look good, and even better, its quite near to where jurys is and at half the price. did you find it far from the attractions? (I haven't been to London yet believe it or not!)

Thanks for that, thats one to add to the list.

My BF and I (both students at the time) stayed at Thistle Marble Arch two years ago. It's located between Oxford Street and Hyde Park, so a pretty central location for sightseeing!

Can't remember what we paid but seeing as we were students it definitely wouldn't have blown the bank!

One thing London has a lot of is hotels.
www.londontown.com is great site and has an interactive hotel map
Also you can browse www.activehotels.com you'll see there's hundreds all at different price points. Location is never an issue once you're near a tube station you're ok.

I'd never been to London either when I booked! So I just had my fingers crossed about the location, and I was happy with it. As I said, the Gloucester Road tube station is a minute's walk from the hotel, and from there you can go anywhere.

It's pretty close to a lot of attractions - as I said, Hyde Park is a short bus ride away, as is the excellent Museum of Natural History. Then hop on the tube to go to a range of other places - London Dungeon, Madame Tussuades, Picadilly Circus, Drury's Lane etc. We did a load of touristy things, and never spent more than 20 minutes on a single underground trip.

Which airport are you going into? As I said, that was the only damper on our trip. We flew into Stanstead, which was miles away. It was grand when we got there because it was morning, and we got a coach from the airport to Victoria station and then the tube to our hotel, which took about an hour. On the way back the tube was closed so we had to get a taxi, which cost a pretty penny.

There is no real solution to the airport issue in London. I've used Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton and all are a fair hike into the City, I know Stansted is the same.

I've never used London City airport but flights are so dear to fly there that's there's hardly any point. At least when you fly into Heathrow it's on the tube line, but with all the stops it still take an hour or whatever to get into London.

Or if you have more money than sense, you could try the Heathrow or Gatwick "Express" - crazy money though. Upwards of £15stg one way.

Premierinns are very good and reasonably priced. They also have numerous hotels scattered around central london so there are plenty of prices and locations available.
