I have been checking these out. I have done some manual handling courses in the past. This appears to my untrained eye that he is using this back to lift the weight or is putting alot of stress on his back.

Can somebody explain how this is safe?

It's safe because his back remains neutral throughout. Look at his lower back, it's perfectly flat. Injuries typically occur when it begins to round.

The bar is pulled into him using his lat and bicep muscles http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/musclesurf/lats-guy.gif

The lower back acts as a stabiliser and isn't techinally "lifting" the weight.
