Was your handicap based on you handing in 3 cards? It's unlikely that the GUI have made a mistake. No you don't automatically start at 18....it's based on your scores.

Discussion here earlier in the year which may help you understand -

Have you a record of your cards or any memory of what was your best of the 3?

Myself and my mate got country membership in Dunmore East, played, got cards sorted out for GUI membership, sent them off etc. I would be between an 18-20 handicap golfer and my mate is a genuine 28 hcp.

So we get our GUI cards and check our handicap marks and we have both started on 14! Surely this is way too low. This does not reflect what was on our cards that we handed in and i thought that you generally started off on 18 anyway.

Not too bothered for myself as its not a million miles off what i can do but my mate has no chance. Dunmore East say that the GUI are being very strict at the moment.

Is there any way to get our handicaps reassessed?

    How much was country membership?

I've heard some stories about this too, they are basically treating all new country members as potential bandits. It's not entirely fair, but there have been many incidents of dodgy handicaps coming through over the last few years. I guess they figure better safe than sorry but it is a bit unfair on your friend.

There was a case 2 years ago of a guy that played off 12 in a well known golf club in dublin and joined a course down south and got a handicap of 20 he won 2 big open week fouball events until someone saw him.

The worst one i ever saw was 2 guys brothers playing in an open fourball one was off 14 and the other was off 5

They switched there handicaps so the 15 handicapper played off 5 but the 5 handicapper played off 15
    Some how they were caught.

My brother's boss was playing a comp which was won by two visitors, by some margin. They smelled a rat and rang their home club to check the handicaps. The handicap secretary confirmed that the handicaps matched the names but said "there's just one problem"....
"Those two lads are sitting in front of me here in the bar!"

They don't know who the two bandits really were but they were ejected and told never to darken the door again!

Shows that if you've a hard enough neck, you don't need any subtlety, country memberships or handicap nursing to be a cheat.

Isn't that the reason for the whole handicap thing being made electronic with cards etc?

You were getting fellas visiting courses, checking out the handicap board, then playing Opens elsewhere and claiming to be "John Smith from Someplace GC"... when the host club checks it out, the name and handicap checks out and the f*ckers effectively nick the prizes...

I must be honest, I don't play many Opens, but I find the attitude to the requests for production of GUI cards disappointingly lax in most places...
