    Howdi guys,
I'm having trouble connecting to some of the servers in work. When I try to connect to some shares on the domain I get the error "The alias "network-name" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found" - Delete Alias / Fix Alias.. / OK

I'm on Tiger and the servers are running Windows Server 2003. I'm using the correct login details as I can connect to the servers using XP on a DELL.

How do I resolve this issue?

I had this error recently when trying to connect to a Linux box running Samba - it turned out to be that the Linux box' firewall was blocking the traffic. It was the exact same error message too. You will also get this error if the password is wrong as well by the way. Is the Dell/XP machine part of the Domains Active Directory ?

Is this problem only occurring now, I mean did this configuration ever work for you ?

There's a good site called www.macwindows.com that might help you resolve this. A lot of people there had issues with keychains storing passwords in 10.3.x and working fine but ran into problems after going to Tiger.

/edit/ This might also be relevant .

This happens me occasionally too, and what I do to fix it is to make a Network location setting called "Null" which has all the network ports (Airport, Ethernet etc) switched off, switch to this Null location when I get the error and then switch back to Automatic (or whatever your work setup is called) after a minute or two. It seems to clear whatever hiccup there is in the system and the network operates as expected again.

Not very tech explanation but it seems to work for me.

Sorry, it's a Domain. We use Active Directory in work.
Our sys admin purchased an application called MacAdmit which managed to connect my MBP to the network but tbh I don't really want to have to rely on a third party service. We are getting two iMacs into the office this week so forking out for software isn't a viable long term solution.
