Perfect for the person who plays older games like Half Life 2 at high settings/newer games at lower settings. 512mb Version.

Cheapest one on Komplett is 66 exc delivery chargers so you can save a tenner or so and be able to walk into the store.

picked this card from dads so i could get the orange box and play tf2 abit early , cost me €84though :( .

still it's a good little card for my old system and the orange box games all play well on it.

would it be worth upgrading to one of these from a x1300 pro?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yes. Though its not a huge difference. Still a lower end card but great at titles like Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2, etc, definitely a good upgrade over an x1300 for those. Just not so good for say, Bioshock and Unreal Tournament 3 and you'd still be confined to lower settings.

I know this is a little off topic, but In PcWorld blanchardstown I picked up a Zalman CNPS8000 and it scanned in for €24.99 which is a good price for A Zalman heatpipe heatsink. It was displayed as €49.99. If anyones after a decent CPU cooler its a good one and good price.

I posted that there, didn't think it deserved its own thread :o

Thread hijack: Any suggestions for a reasonably priced card capable of handling Bioshock at medium settings? (In a p4 3.4 w/ 2gig ram).

    Assuming you're pci-e, x1950gt 98 euro on komplett

Another hi-jack :o Seen an ATi X1800XL 512MB PCI-e card for €89 in peats today. Thought it was an ok price for a cheap card in a local shop. Will play most games plesently well. Well worth the extra 20 euro over an X1650 if you want to play games. As mentioned also the X1950 is a nice little card on komplett for some affordable PCI-e card.

You sure it was an X1800XL for 89? Its a good price, and not wholly surprisingly considering how cheap X1950GT's and the like are now, but for Peats that seems suspiciously cheap. It is a good card even now....

    Jaysus, i'm way behind .. :)

My last card was a 3dfx Voodoo 3500

After that i realised i wasnt really into games.

had a NEC PowerVR too .. remember the old S3 Trio 64 V+

Even a Cirrus Logic 2400 with a VESA interface !

Would this card be a decent step up from my current Radeon X800GTO2?

    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

No, not really. They're good budget cards but are not performance parts. The only difference is that they do support shader model 3, so games that wouldn't run on the X800 would run on the X1650Pro, like Airborne, Bioshock, UE3, etc.

I find this quite useful for comparing relative value of gfx cards

Thanks for that according to the TH list its only on the list above my current card, but what if I bought two and crossfired them? or is the improvement only minimal?

Yeah it's a new family supporting newer features but as a performance card the X1650Pro is poor. It wouldn't really even be an 'upgrade' apart from allowing you to run new games that require SM3. Crossfire would be a waste, seeing as for 130 euro (the price of two) you could get an X1950Pro which would lay waste to an X1650Pro crossfire setup. You can even get an X1950GT for 98 euro from Komplett. edit: Not to mention what HJ said above about X1800XL. If that is the right price then that's a clear winner for any potential budget gamers and it would be a kick ass upgrade from an X800.

The only value lying in this card is someone upgrading from a really old card, needs a stop gap, wants a cheap card they can walk in and buy to basically run a desktop, etc.
