I am a Retail Store Manager at present but need a career change. I have a BA Business Degree and am thinking of moving in to Accountancy but dont know what the career path would be for me and what Salary to expect or the best way to go about it. Also I am 32 next year and have a bad feeling it might be too late to change. Advice????

Ideally, if the organisation you work for is big enough, you could transfer internally. Firstly, persuade your company to pay for your studies and after you've passed a few exams - make a case to move into finance in the head-office.

In any case, it's not necessarily too late, there are plenty of 30 somethings in the classes I attend. You would probably have to take a substantial pay-cut initially, and may have to take a job in the type of place where they find it almost impossible to get and retain good staff, e.g an old industrial park in Donabate or somewhere like that, which makes it even more difficult to get to college on time.

The chessplayer - i've seen you mention a couple of time that people like this would have to take paycuts. Are you speakng about going into practice? Because the OP could quite conceiveably get a job in industry or fin serv and not take a paycut as I did. There are other routes than practice if thats what you mean

I meant a paycut in that at 32 he probably earns a comparatively half-decent salary so if he wants to become a trainee then he would be looking at a pay cut.

However, if he wishes to pass his exams first, and then look for work as an accountant, then I'm not too sure what opportunities would be out there, as most jobs stipulate a minimum couple of years experience etc. In any case, going into practice would probably not be an option.
