Well I may have mentioned it before that I had to head into the hospital and with the Irish system that turned out to be on the Sunday night, they did a few tests and then operated on the Tuesday, then the released me on Friday. bit quick for what they did :D
The op was an "awake" surgery, so they woke me up during the surgery and it took about 11 hour's to complete, best thing is everything is working just as fine as it did before :)

So that's why I haven't been posting every day for the last week or so, might take a while before I get fully up to speed, I don't want to be out looking for fox's and end up banging my head, so think of this photo as my first self portrait C&C :p

I was right as rain about 2 hours after the surgery answering all questions without any problems, very odd type of surgery. Feeling fine now, just don't want to rush things :)

As for painkillers they offered some panadol to me, feckin panadol !, there is no pain with the surgery, all you can feel is the stitches on your head, apart from that there's no more pain receptors inside the skull/brain, handy ;)

    Hey there,

Would you mind terribly if I ask what kind of operation you got done and
    why?.

Hope your on the mend anyway....looks pretty cool and sore...

Wow that looks severe, take it easy until you get the all clear, no point rushing things.

My sister had one of those ops some years ago, and ever since i have nothing but respect for the bravery and skill of the people who can face into a job like that.

i should have started off with that, well 2 years ago I collapsed in work and headed off to A&E, they ran a CT scan and noticed something odd. Then I was sent to Beaumont to get a biopsy done, which revealed that I have a Astrocytoma brain tumour right in the middle of my speech and control of the right side of my body, not the word you want to hear but anyway.

The decided to leave it and see what happens, everything was fine till before xmas last year when I ended up getting 5 seizures in one month plus the pressure on the brain was restricting my head/spine movement so they went for the "awake" surgery last year, but my brain swelled and they removed what they could at the time without affecting my speech/movement (too dangerous to wake me up), after that I was in a coma for about 4 days and spent the next 3 days lying in ICU not being able to speak or move the right side of my body, the left hand could barely hold a black marker, but I came back from that after 20 days.

Then I went for radiotherapy (6 weeks), which didn't affect me that much. So for the last 6 months I was in perfect health, no seizures etc., feeling well taking photo's etc. So they decided that as I was fine now, it would be a good time to go back in and try the surgery again.

So they did, they woke me up in the surgery to basically test the sections they wanted to remove, so they'd ask me a question, stimulate part "A" ask again, they repeat that over and over to see what is and what isn't used, its a safer way to remove bits of the tumour, at least then they can say if i cut this "A" section we lose power on left side and speech, then they leave it.

So all went well this time, to meet me I'm fine to talk with, you wouldn't notice a problem, I'm "fine" if you know what I mean. That's why all my photo's I've taken are in and around my house, as my driver's license is not a good idea at the moment

As for pain, well there's none, it looks gruesome I know but it's just like getting a cut on your arm, just stitched up, plus with the skull being removed for a bit the nerve cells are kinda dumbed down around that region so I don't feel any pain, plus losing sensation in a 1 inch section around the cut doesn't bother me in the slightest, more worried about my belly :D

Oh yea I'm 28 btw, all of this started when I was 26, and being an engineer/programmer you can build some very odd things when your that bored for that length of time

Sure if the fella says that he's fine, then we must believe he is.
    I think it's a great picture!
    Did you use a tripod?
Agree about upping the contrast though.

    Holy fupp!!! That's some picture!

Glad to hear the surgery went well, but modern medicine and surgery just amazes me to be honest.... What they can do these days is incredible..

The way they tested during the operation is the way you'd test code or a computer program..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Uhmmm kinda speechless too tbh, which is fairly rare for me. All I can say is well done for getting through it, with what sounds like a very positive frame of mind. Take care and all the best with the next stage of getting well..

Hey Muineach, best of luck for a speedy recovery. Friend of mine had a similar procedure about 5 years ago and hasn't looked back, now a proud father of two. That scar will be something to show the kids ...
