Nissan Vanette?

I know some of ye guys will probably hate me for this.. but this is the only place on here that a lot of people will have knowlege of old vehicles....

Basically i've taken a notion to get hold of one, an old one....
and maybe have a go at putting a Patrol 6 cylinder engine into it... or possibly a big turbo. The plan of doing that might come to nothing but i wouldnt mind finding an old van all the same even if it's only to tidy it up and test it.

Anyone know of an old style vanette around somewhere? preferably cheap or free?
EDIT: Or alternatively i'd consider a transit (Mk3, 86 to 93 ish).... or a toyota liteace (80s boxy one, or the slightly rounder one up to about 95.)

    Takes all sorts I guess.

Would you be thinking of the ones with the round twin headlamps?

I might... anything up to 95 really. as they went horrible after that.
Older one, like the roundy lights ones are nicer lookin though.

A relative has a square headlamp variant outside his house. I'm not sure if it runs or not, but it is a funky shade of orange, and seems in good overall shape. (It's ex. Cantrell & Cochrane?-the Fanta people...)

I'll suss it out next week when I see him, if you wish.

Excellen, orange could be good... i might have something to power it for a while if it doesnt run (one of the old 2 litre Chain drive diesels out of a vanette of unknown age/spec/origin, but residing in a opel rekord)... but i'd really prefer if it did run, would make moving it around much easier.

It'll b einteresting to see what's out there anyway in terms of sizing up this whole idea

Jaysus, my uncle had a Datsun Vanette back in the early 90's (I can bairely remember it myself). It fell to bits with rust!

I'll be honest, you'll be VERY lucky to find any Vanette of similar vintage without rust problems.

You could try eBay if all else fails.

Ah it be grand....:D That's what i always say. like putting a liquid cooled Two STroke yamaha rd125 ypvs engine into an old Suzuki TS100 was grand....until i realised it was A, too fast for a dirtbike, and B, my home made engine mounting broke at 70mph.
    But it was grand.

And with the vanette sure i could cut the floor out and mount the engine in the load area like a ford Supervan....

Oh i would.. an dthen you'd have to leave because the horror of a rusty old tractor would be too much ha ha ha ha
    :D:D:D:D

But anyway.. i think i may edit my post... because on reflection i would take a toyota liteace, or a transit....

Vanettes, Hmmm, well the ESB had a good few, there may be some still knocking around. And LiteAces. But transits, well they always were in a league of their own!!! Love them. check out the Cavan show thread. theres at least two early transits pictured there. Lovely!!!! I've always wanted to put a mustang V8 in a Mk 1 transit panel van. in RED!!!

Yeah old mk1 and mk2 transits are really cool, but far too expensive for the purpose i want it for.. which is to attempt to put some kind of more powerful engine into and some kind of better brakes, as in havin a go at it myself... whereas with a mk1 or mk2 transit id want a nice clean one and wouldnt be takin the risk of havin a go at it myself this early in my diy car altering life.

So what im aimin for is some kind of a liteace, vanette or transit, under a grand to mess around with myself, so if i make a balls of it i havnt chucked out too much cash.
Might evengo for a bigger yoke like a hiace or a urvan... but really a SWB is what i'd need

getting burnt off by a ESB vanette at the lights would be tres embarassing....go for it, theres too many Civics around anyway.....

:D That reminds me of a mad creation a neighbour of my grandfather once made. his brand new Renault 21 turbo was rear ended by a lorry, so he took the whole engine and subframe out and put it in an ex-An Post Renault 4 van. i have no idea how he did it, but aside from a few holes in the body (for cooling i presume!) it was bog standard. it even had the original rear wheels!! boy could it shift though!!! Downright dangerous i'd say too.

Wel.. yes, i'd imagine that it was ridiculously dangerous....
What made me thing of doin the souped up van was remembering a '88 Hiace my uncles used to have for deliverin mushrooms, which had a landcruiser 3.0TD engine in it.. which he'd also done some other stuff to as well, turned up the fuel pump, fitted big injectors, an dtowards the last few months when he had it he put the turbo off some class of toyota bus on it... it was a cool machine.. was a few years back now though.

    @corKtina:

Indeed, that's what im aiming for, it's somethin i'd enjoy a fair bit, have a van that was actually reasonably quick, which actually would probably have a fair bit of go takin off because of the way the gearin is on vans.... my favourite thing would be a cossie transit.. but there's no way i could afford that without gettin a loan, and i dont do debt...
So im thinkin somethin diesel powered, because i like diesel

, which actually would probably have a fair bit of go takin off because of the way the gearin is on vans....

...........what will actually happen is first gear will be redundant, you will launch about 2 feet in a barrel load of wheelspin before you run out of revs at about 10MPH.

Or you could just use 2nd.................and tear away from prtty much everything, but you'd have to throw a clutch at it once a year !

I dont mind having to change the clutch regularly... I've a granada that's been through 2 clutches this year, not to mention 16 part worn tyres, a full set of discs and pads, 2 diffs...
It's all in the name of fun.. so i dont mind

have to say, I was wondering wtf you were on about with this thread, until you mentioned your uncles van with a souped up 3 litre turbodiesel in it.. Thats class. Would be tempted by a project like this at some stage. Some sort of decent modern tdi engine in it, up the boost, big turbo, big intercooler. Would be hilarious.

Seen the Rally transit, its very cool, but a wee bit beyond my budget ha ha !
And yeah, seen the supervan too but it was good to get a look again.
Prefer the MK1 and Mk2 supervans... becaust the look like vans still, the supervan3 is still class, but basically is just a van shaped race car
