Just wondering about the 2nd year chemistry projects that are done in the year. how do they work. does everyone in the group have to make the presentation speech. how many are in the groups and who gives the topics?

It's easy, don't worry about it. Not everyone has to speak (there's about ten in each group I think, so too many to do a talk), basically split up your group into research, powerpoint design and speakers. Not everyone will pull their weight, some will do more than others. It's a bit of fun and important practice (you'll be giving presentations in 3rd/4th year quite often depending on the course you choose, I think I did about 5-6).

Yeah, I remember this. Think I did it the same year as john would have been '03/'04, god... I did some work initially, my group kind of ignored it, so I sat back and did nothing (I also failed the chemistry annuals that year there was some serious impetus lacking also). Anyway, before the presentations I had visited the pav, and the associated free wine reception that was for some reason before the event. I ended up falling asleep on a girl (she wasn't happy about it) in my group while john corish (head of school of chemistry) was talking. I also missed a few presentations during my wee nap.
Those freshman years we're something else...

As John said, later in your degree you'll likely be giving lots of presentations. I've done a good few now. Just wait and see til (if?) you become a postgrad, it's all about the presentations.

Even if you don't become a postgrad, nearly every company/university/whatever has group meetings, conferences and whatnot and being able to present is a skill that will carry over to many, many situations.

I'd just like to say that they were a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME for me.

And, if you do schol they don't count and are on right before... which is the silliest thing ever...,
