GAA vs Soccer player confirmation

Ok I'm keeping this thread for the GAA forum team to confirm their interest in playing for the GAA team against the soccer team.I still have a few PMs from the last invitation but I need a recap on the people who are interested.

So please post with your intention to train and play. There is suggestion from the soccer team that we play the match in 2 weeks but this is way too soon.I think we could play this in March or April when the ground is a bit harder and we have had sufficient time to get to know each other and get some structure on our team for both codes. We'll also need to get venues for training and warmup matches plus organise independent referees etc so much planning is needed.

I'm putting a provisional date for closing applications on Sunday 18th November.Ideally I'm looking for a panel of 22 but 18 is fine.Any of the more senior members who are not up for playing can be part of the management :)
I'm trying to get a fair structure on the team.So please post with your intention to play.

    Thank you.

Excellent stuff,we have a defection. What position do you usually play?

One Cold Hand,I doubt very much that we'll have the actual soccer/GAA match before or in February but you are more than welcome to train and play in the warmup matches.

Anywhere for either, we will win but we need a scoring system to aggregate the 2 games. The filth i cant get away with in soccer is like a normal tackle in GAA and GBH on the streets.

Suppose 1 soccer goal = 3 points could work i think they may rape us and our point scoring may prove to be the deciding factor.

Can you train midweek at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

I am playing soccer week in week out until then and I am going to the gym 2-3 times a week. I am match fit now, in April I should be super match fit or something. Maybe kdjacl can give us the low-down on their better players and tactics. We will definitely flatten them anyway but anything will help.

I will play. In Gaelic football I'm a forward but in soccer I've played almost everywhere except goalie so don't really mind where. Fitness not the best right now but should be match fit by the time this comes around.

we need to pick a date earlier than the proposed June on our forum lads!

and we also need to decide on rules and format, 2 totally seperate games on 2 differnet days or run on half and half on one day etc......

id say ye would have a big edge on this cos most Gaa players can be decent at soccer, whereas its not as easy the other way. we have only 3 or 4 players that play both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Lads I sent out a PM to those who expressed interest in playing these games. In respect to contacts and availability.

We don't quite have the numbers yet but I think we're getting there.I am sure more will sign up and hopefully some of the hoganstand 8 will participate.

    HomerJay,

I think the best thing to do is for each forum to have a degree of bargaining power in terms of dates for each game, time, venue and jersey selection. If you guys want to have the soccer match in spring,we'll try and get organised for then.

Depending on how well training is going,I would be of the belief that we can get these matches started by March/April.Ideally (my personal preference) the GAA match will be in summertime around June.A lot of us would have college and exams out of the way by then.

I think the idea of having two seperate matches,at different times and venues is the best idea.

Let us know what you and the soccer lads think. Its early days,so a consensus will have to reached before we can make any proper decisions.

You need to request access. All the info is in the charter. Think you need to have a min of 50 posts

Go here, read the charter and start a new access request thread. Don't forget to use the current identifier words, in italics in the charter.

You need to be a member of boards for more than 1 month and have a minimum of 50 posts.

From what I've heard, they had to close the soccer forum down a few years ago because it got so bad. People were opening new accounts just to troll and ended up ruining everything. It's basically just a vetting process to see if you actually have any interest in sticking around and contributing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭Tomthepost

you wouldn't expect that from soccer fans

anybody can post on the boards team thread, but not on the main soccer forum. that place can get nasty and bans are regular (liverpool and united fans etc), so there needs to be something in place to stop people posting randomly with new accounts. i think u need 50 posts and 2 months posting on other threads to be accepted.

anyway, as re this match, how are ye shaping up. jaysus, alot of our lads dont play gaa, so i think ye have a big advantage on this one. are we going 15 a side football (pitch??) or maybe 11 a side for both would be best?

Getting your excuses in early?! ;)

Tbh, Bordeaux have the advantage of being a proper team and you've played together for a good while. It has to be 15-a-side on a senior/juvenile GAA pitch for the gaelic football and 11-a-side on a soccer pitch for the soccer part. 2 halves, 40 minutes a half maybe? Or are you looking to play 2 separate games? You'll probably need a ref for both aswell. And pitches, maybe a public park like St. Anne's, Phoenix Park, somewhere on the northside where the grass is greener!

We're not too sure Smashey.Certainly in the New Year anyway. We might have the soccer match in March if we can get somewhat organised. The responses I got indicated that this side of Xmas was a no-no and for me personally it was the same.

I'm proposing to have the GAA match in June.I think its better that way due to college exams being over and by that time, the championship will have started so "GAA Fever" will be on a high whilst those poor soccer players will have withdrawal symptoms from the end of the premiership.:D:D
