Mixing protein drinks hours before workout

    Hi,

I've been mixing whey protein with water at home in the mornings and then leaving it in the fridge in work. I was wondering how long it will keep for before going a bit off? I forgot to take it yesterday and I was going to drink it this evening but not sure if that's alright?

    Thanks

no it's not you need to drink it as soon as you mix it

Fair enough, I thought it would be a bit dodgy after two days. But do you really need to drink it right away? I often see guys drinking shakes after their workouts that they must have made a few hours beforehand.

The protein starts degrading as soon as it’s mixed, I bring an extra bottle of water with me for mixing , just dump it in the shaker (powder already in it) shake and drink ;)

Ok there was a huge post about this here before where people actually went into the chemistry of it and in the end I think it was decided that the protein would NOT degrade but I would still take crotalus's advice

bring a bottle of water and mix as needed

Do you drink milk straight from the cow? or do you leave it in the fridge for a few days? :D

Once you reconstitute the whey (by adding water, milk etc) you need to keep it cool to stop it going rancid. If it's kept in the fridge it's fine for a few hours, probably overnight even. Just remember that it's already been processed quite a lot, so the taste will deteriorate a little faster than 'fresh' milk would.

Never occurred to me that protein might degenerate after mixing. I did a bit of googling and found a few things that seem to say this. I've always made mine a good bit before drinking them.
I've read that creatine becomes creatinine about 20 minutes after being mixed anyway. Probably better to be on the safe side as regards mixing and mix right before you drink them if possible.
