like a sauna suit? I see a lot of boxers wearing them - most notably on the Contender - however they just make you lose water afaik

Depends on your current height/weight.. Do you weigh-in on the same day as the fight or the day before? Assuming you're trying to make weight for the fight. You can cut anything from 2kg-5kg in water weight the day before in a sauna, depending on your weight, size and if you've done it before. I'd say for someone not cutting normally, 2kg maximum.

Sweat suit will help, but diet will too. Stick to chicken, fish, veg (use broccoli for your carbs) and oranges for your immune system. Drink only water. Run alot between now and go time.

When I boxed several years ago, sweat suits were NOT available or at least not to my knowledge. If they were I certainly would have used them, as I now train with them and I can honestly say they are fantastic. You say they just make you lose water? What else is to lose but water and salts. That's what boxers have been losing since day one. In a typical 45 minute session consisting of a 20 minute decent threadmill run(4-5km), some moderate weights and sit ups, you will lose at least 1.4kgs, and possibly more depending on your makeup. Wearing the suits or how to wear them is the key. How I do it is as follows:

The sweat bottoms are put next to your bare skin.
A pair of tracksuit bottoms over the sweat bottoms.
Put on one t-shirt, then put the sweat top over this and then
put two t-shirts over the sweat top...
Always wear a wooly hat or beanie as most of the heat
you will lose originates from your head...

Maybe you have experience of saunas, I have been in them and IMO, you lose f*** all weight, unless of course you are being aerobic in them.
Basically all you are getting is moisture, and it gives the impression that you are sweating, when really the weight you are losing is very very minimal...

I'm basing it on common weight cutting techniques for wrestling or mma. Wrestlers have been cutting weight since they were 13 or 14, so they are good at it.

Ideally - sauna involves an excercise bike along with a sweat suit. It's not easy, and very draining - both mentally and physically. It's not unheard of for wrestlings or mma guys to cut 9-11 KG in the sauna - less seasoned guys probably cut about 5KG. This is only possible if your weigh-in is a day before your fight, otherwise, it's not worth the hassle as you wouldn't have the energy to fight.

Without a doubt, if you do any physical exercise in a sauna with a suit, you will lose
    a lot of weight.....

Losing weight through sweat training is unhealthy and should only be used as a last resort the day before for weigh ins, if the water is not replaced your dehydrated and have less padding(water) on the brain due to dehydration, i wear 1 the day before if im a couple of kg over and quickly replace fluids-walking around dehydrated can be done by simply not drinking and this would not be advised so sweat suits are the same-Avoid unless your near your weight class. also the electrolytes lost can cause cramps and all sorts of other problems..lose weight (fat)through diet and exercise or else move up weight divisions

There are alot of benefits to fighters who can cut weight efficiently. Gatti cut weight effectively in his early career and overpowered alot of people because of it. If done right and efficiently, you can be a stone up in weight come fight time.
