Vol. 5 comes courtesy of Dublin based DJ, Halfdutch. A regular
feature on the capitals music scene. This D.J. came to more prominence
after a series of her mix tapes caught the attention of ‘The Evening
Herald’ amongst others. Noted for loading up on vinyl for gigs her old
school approach is evident here. Think ‘Afrika Bambata’ meets ‘Diplo’.

Like her previous mixes the sets incorporates a multitude of styles
that compliment each other extremely well. Bhangra, funk, hip hop,
soul, reggae, 80’s electro, jazz, disco, baile funk all feature
amongst others. The beat mixing is tight & the track selection is well
programmed with 29 tracks over 60 plus mins & it’s clear that careful
attention has been paid to the running order. Staples in many DJ’s
record box ‘Public Enemy’s’ ‘Bring the noise”, ‘Kurtis Blow’s’ ‘The
Breaks & ‘The Incredible bongo bands’ timeless take on ‘The Shadows’
‘Apache’ are blended with lesser aired cuts from ‘Guts’ ‘& the living
is easy’, ‘Zebs’ ‘Balkany & Flowers’ & ‘Kerrier Districts’ ‘115bpm’

There are some great moments in this mix & it moves swiftly through so
even if you’ve got ‘musical A.D.D.’ it’s sure to hold your interest
throughout. Highlights include the fusing of ‘Electrons’ ‘Woo Woo’
over ‘Mark the 45 Kings’ dance floor devastator ‘The 900 No’. Hugo
Montenegro’s spaghetti western anthem ‘The Good, the bad & the ugly’
is used to great effect & ‘Ready for the worlds’ princesque ‘Oh
Sheila’ over the famed ‘coolie riddim’ works a treat. DM Projects’
‘Planet rock’ sampling ‘Habibi’ is well placed followed in succession
by the original from ‘Bambata’. With the set closes in fine form with
‘Von Sudenfed’s’ ode to DJ’ng ‘Flooded’

This is sure to receive several spins & if you like what you hear then
check DJ Halfdutch out at her monthly residency for ‘Human Music’ at
their ‘Rock Candy’ event amongst others & on her weekly radio show for
‘Raidio na Life’ 106.4FM or www.rnl106.com every Saturday night from 9
    to 10.30pm
