I am in the catering game for about 18/19 years , chefs must be the only PROFESSION that has not benefited from the economic boom in recent years, every job i apply for the salaries get smaller & smaller, employers think that we should be greatful for what they offer us,we work long unregulated hours and weekends. The profession is dying . think a change of career is on the cards any suggestions????

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems to be an industry where you can get reasonable wages very quickly, but then the wages stay roughly the same forever...

    Could you move into management?

Try retail management if you think wages are crap. Salaries there have been almost static while managers required to work more and unsociable hours.

    True.

In fact, when I was in college (10 years ago) I worked part-time (30 hours per week) in tech support. I was renting and paying my way via my tech support job... I always had spare money at the end of the month.

Even though I'm supposed to be earning a lot more now, I actually don't feel too much better off than I did back then!

So yeah, I agree, the money in IT hasn't quite gone up (in real terms) either.

I have notice that food out has gone up at least 10% per annum in the last 5 years and I find it hard to understand who is getting the money if the staff aren't getting it. Chef and catering in general lends itself much better than most professions to self employment. Have you tried going out on your own?
I know it means long hours, risk of failure if you can't mix it with the often cut-throat competition and needs to have the support of one's life partner to carry off but you will never make real money working for someone else.

So after 6 years working in this profession, 10 euro an hour is very bad i reckon as it is a job you study for but many other jobs offer similar wages without having done a degree! My friend is in this situation and i thought maybe he is being exploited in his job as he is foreign yet he has loads of experience.

I realise this is an old thread but anyway....
