This isn't intended as a smart-arsed reply, but what's stopping you spending €80 on a good pair of trainers and encouraging her to walk outdoors?

Maybe I should just spend €80 but I think that if the thread mill is there she WILL use it specially if ive spent a lot of money on it also im hoping the whole family will start using it. I also think she would be a lot more comfortable doing it the tread mill way also she can notice her progress more. Basically i dont mind how much it is once she starts to lose this weight shes gained after 4 kids.....please help! :)

My Dad has a great top of the range exercise bike that I chipped in to buy for him as a present. He gets great use out of it... as a towel rack :o

I can understand what you're saying about her feeling more comfortable and getting the family involved... but wouldn't it be even better then to get the whole family to out for walks together!??! Get everyone out in the fresh air, enjoy one another's company, there's a whole heapload of wonderful areas all around the country you can go walking, or why not help your Mum sign up to a walking group? My Mum regularly goes for afternoon walks in the Wicklow mountains with her group and she meets new people all the time.

Make exercise fun and people will stick to it. And join in with the exercise yourself, that way you both reap the benefits!

    Hey,

If you're going to invest so much into your mother's health (which I applaud) there's far more productive ways of going about it.

You could get her sessions with a personal trainer - that way she'd get personal attention (I'm judging from the tone of your post she'd feel uncomfortable exercising outdoors/in view of other people).

You could also buy her membership with weight watchers - which are a supportive group and all in the same boat. She mightn't feel this in a big box gym, which are intimidating places, particularly if you're overweight or don't know what you're doing.

If you're around South Dublin you can call up to me together. That way you'd both be doing the same thing and she'd have someone there she knows who could encourage her.

But seriously, do not waste money on a threadmill.

all the above are true but if you want to do really want to get some equipment you'll get a much better quality exercise bike for that sort of cash - it'll be better on the knees and she can put it in front of the TV and cycle through her favourite shows. If you're up for this I'll check what make the one I have at home is and post it up later.
