Advice required on dvd copying/burning

I am buying a dvd camcorder. I hope to copy some of the mini dvds on to my pc and create a combined dvd at a later stage. My pc is a dell and has a dvd r/w drive. I have copied and burned cds befor but never a dvd. Is it the same principle with a dvd or would I need to get special software. Any help grateful.
