Just how good is this drive, compared to the BluRay players on the market? I remember when the PS2 came out, the DVD drive in it was described as basic.

Meant to be very good. Also as an upscaling dvd player it is supposed to be excellent.

It's one of the best, if not the best. Picture quality holds its own, and it's probably the fastest loading Blu-ray player out there. And it has a big advantage in upgrade ability (there've already been a few enhancements to the blu-ray playback and picture quality since launch), and it'll probably be easily upgradeable to support things like BD Live! unlike some other players.

    Here's one AV review:

    http://www.ultimateavmag.com/hddiscplayers/1206ps3blu/index1.html
Compared to Samsung's BD-P1000 and (briefly) Sony's BDP-S1 as BD players, the PS3 is superior in absolute picture quality to the former, and more than holds its own with the latter. And it kills both in terms of startup and disc access speed and overall ergonomic prowess and stability.
    Highs
    Excellent image quality with Blu-ray
Lightning fast disc loading and access speeds
Superior connectivity to standalone BD players with HDMI 1.3 and Wi-Fi
Superior audio decoding capabilities with 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD
Software upgradeble plaform- it could keep getting better!

    Lows
SIXAXIS wireless controller as remote control will give non-gamers fits
    Very soft DVD playback
Lacks ability to upconvert DVDs and 720p games to 1080i/p
No multichannel analog outs- you must have HDMI 1.1 or later in your AVR or pre/pro to take full advantage of its audio capabilities

Note that a firmware update recently added DVD upconversion, and it does a very good job of it.

I really have no interest in this as a games machine, but it seems there are some decent deals this morning with the 40GB and free BR-DVDs. 400 for a Bluray player is very decent.

It's worth the money even if your not going to play games on it. It's a fantastic blu ray/dvd upscaler.

Yeah have one and its great for Blu-Ray Movies, I have a Tosh HD-DVD player as well but its put to shame by the speed and firmware updates for the PS3. Its the way to go at the moment, and at 399 might push more folks towards taking the plunge into Blu-Ray over HD-DVD.
