Enlargement Query

    Hi Guys

For my brother's upcoming birthday, I'd like to get him an elargement
    of a 500 x 500 image mounted in a frame.

I've searched everywhere and I can't find a larger one to take to a photo shop.

My query is, how can I get the image enlarged to a good size like 3 foot square
without the image going all blocky?

    Thanks

You won't get a 3ft image from a 75k file, I'm afraid. You can't just make up information that isn't there.

But if you took the picture, why would you have to search for a larger version...?

Not to try and spoil your present to him but that image might be copyrighted and a print shop could refuse to print it.

I doubt most places will care (especially if you're just doing one copy) but just something to keep in mind.

That's a pretty tall order. I assume the original file from the camera is bigger than the 75k, well I hope it is at any rate.

If you look at the dimensions of the file it will allow you to work out how large you can print to. For good quality prints you should be looking for about 200 - 300 pixels per inch. So for that 500 x 500 image you uploaded you're looking at a 2.5 inch square print. Very far from the 3ft square you are looking for!

Try get as big a file as you possibly can (if you know someone with a good dslr for example) and work from that.

Try and get someone with a very good scanner!

Will give you much more accurate and higher quality results than a professional camera.

Just be prepared for a file around a few hundred megabytes large ;)

I took the image down, don't want to cause any hassle for boards.ie

The image is an actual photo of a photo I took years ago, it's a special edition of the cover.
The album is out of circulation, it was a demo or a EP I think.

Being a dunba*s I was tricking around with paint shop pro, trying to edit it and
reduced the only file I had to 500 x 500.

I'll try and get it enlarged somehow.

    Thanks for trying!

Didn't mean to scare you - companies will be looking for much bigger fish to fry (your intended use is very good-hearted, I'm sure shops won't mind).

You could perhaps even bring the album into a print shop where they will have high quality scanners - get the enlargement done there.

Go internet! I've got plenty of answers here :)

I've heard that incrementally increasing the photo in size by 10% constantly is the best method to enlarge successfully. It really is a tall order to make it as large as you want, but then again I doubt you're looking for a super sharp print, just something that looks decent enough.

Pop the photo up again and I'll see how big I can make it without it looking pants.

It's cool, my other bro found a 12" vinyl record of thee album on ebay. We can get snap printing or
one of those to do a job on it.

Thanks for all the help though!
