NTL and Netopia router

I've just had NTL come and install the net at my place. They forgot the wireless router which we needed as we have two laptops. We have a Netopia 3347WG which was formerly distributed by eircom i believe. Tried hooking it up, but no joy.

What do i need to do to use this with the ntl connection?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You'll need a cable modem/router and not an ADSL one.

Difference is the cable connection is a direct IP link between the small NTL box and your router. Wireless route just needs to run DHCP request on the interface and it gets a public IP.

Your old eircom one will be trying to establish a tunnel over a protocol I can't remember the name of. L2TP or something.

Linksys WRT54G will see you right. And any others which mention cable.

Went to Maplins, Dixons guys sent me there. Said Maplins would sort me as they 'specialise' with wireless routers for NTL.

So, bought an AzureWave IEEE 802.11 b/g 4 port router.

For some reason it isn't picking up the net, though it says the connection is there. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron (centrino) by the way, with the wireless capability in-built.

My flatmate hasn't had any luck trying to get this up either.

So far I've setup 2 wireless routers on NTL.

Logical :: Cable -> NTL small adapter box -> Router -> PC
    Physical :: Coax -> RJ45 -> RJ45/Wireless

So recommend that you do the following. Set up the router such that you can get an IP address from it for your PC and manage the router settings. So via your browser or similar.

From PC, ping the router. You might see a gateway IP listed on the router. Something that doesn't start with 192..... or 172.... If you do ping it. If that works then you are on the net. Now from the same command prompt do a lookup for google or other famous site. So 'nslookup www.google.com'. If it fails then try 'nslookup www.google.com 204.246.1.20'. I think it's an eircom DNS server. If that works then set you PC to use that DNS server.

    Hi folks

hope you dont mind me hijacking this thread. I have a similar problem

I recently got Chorus/NTL. I just have their cable modem installed, now I wasnt to create a wireless network.

I have a belkin adsl modem with wirelss g router.
I also have a dlink adsl router.

from what I've read above the dlink adsl router is useless to me. I've tried to get it goin but no joy.

when I hook up the belkin, I can get online with both my pcs (laptop + desktop) but cant get them networked together.

my laptop is assigned an ip address 89.101.*,* whereas the desktop is assigned 192.168.*.* so obviously if they are in two different subnets I'm gonn a have a problem.

any idea why this is happening? Is it a hardware probem, i.e. the belkin isnt suitable or is it just in need of seom configuration?

    thanks folks
