I'm having a bit of a problem with a stair master at the moment. Been using it for a couple of weeks now but I still can't get up the stairs in my house any faster. Any Ideas why?

That's like a marathon runner training on a treadmill - you gotta get out there are train on real stairs.
Try a selection of different types, library stairs are always a challenge I find, and some government buildings are good too.

When I began my stair climbing training I too used a stairmaster but when I went out with my friends at weekend doing our stair races I was always coming last. I found that they were training on real stairs mid-week, and mixing it up with different stair types.

I believe pro-stair climbers use well known stadia to train, running up between the seats - this sounded like a good plan to me, coz you get the endurance type stair here, I asked the GAA but they wouldnt let me train in Croker coz they said stair running was for brits, so I had to look elsewhere - got kicked out of UCI Cinema there last week coz I was trying to train during Superbad (which is hilarious btw!)

Some Super High Intensity Training should sort that out in no time. Support it with repetitive Bodyweight Unstable Long Lounging Super High Intensity Training and you'll be up and down those stairs like lightening.

Oh yeah, post up diet for micro-analysis and inevitable and exasperating ridicule.

I'm not sure if I understand the query. Are you aiming to climb your stairs as quickly as possibly? The stairmaster is not the way to go about that. That would be like a marathon runner testing himself over 100m.

    As g'em said, more feedback/info/diet/objectives/pics/asl. :D

The problem is plantarflexion. Many people assume that since dorsiflexion is the way forward on the flat that the same applies on your stairs. You need to focus on plantarflexion, maybe get a pair of "pointe shoes" like the ones ballet dancers use. Amphibian King in Bray sell these and can suggest the best pointe shoes to buy using gait analysis while running up a stairs.

Also, only go up the stairs on an empty stomach and never spend more than 1 hour on any stairs. A stairs is a good place to meet really good looking women.

I take great offense at that, have stairs lost all their meaning to you people?? Is nothing sacred anymore?

So, anyway.. hey, how you doin? :D

I suggest you concentrate on heavy negatives. Load a pile of books in a bag and run DOWN the stairs.....it makes no real sense to the objective but it's suitably different advice to set me apart from the rest of the field.

Interesting concept... hardback or paperback books? And does it have to be a straight flight of stairs or is it feasible to add intermittent bends to include that 'functional strength' element?

    why the stairs hating?
I swear by step ups, great for hip mobility. They're the same principle

I would suggest simple GERMAN paper backs, there is not one scientific study to show that a book with a hard back added to it is any more beneficial than a normal paperback…if anything it could possibly be toxic……blah ……blah……stomach PH…….and so on and so on.

(( Sorry folks, slight injoke there ))

Oh yeah.....and i can't think of a single sport that takes place on a straight stairs....bendy all the way!!! :D

I disagree, straight stairs using a wobble board will simulate a bendy stairs and will leave you less prone to injury.

While some of the above advice is of merit, I think it's fair to say that the OP is really not just your average stairmasterer, he's going for the elite. I don't think he has hours and hours every day to run steps, be they bendy or not, with a bag full of books on his back, even paperback german fiction!

With my new e-book, 'Secrets of 7 second stairs', I can guarantee less injuries and show you how to work it harder, make it better, do it faster and it will absolutely, 100% makes us stronger. It's been tipped to be a best seller already and it's easy to see why. Stairclimbing has become one of the most talked about sports of the naughties and with modern day pressures and time constraints, who has time to wait around for elevators, or to casually wander through the meandering stairwells and fire escapes of the buildings of tomorrow.

PM me for a free copy if you think you deserve one. Elite stairclimbers only need apply.
