I just thought some of you might like to see some photos of a hearse we're restoring, it's going for painting this week. We replaced the floors and sills etc., stripped it to bare metal and should have it motoring by the weekend.

Have you any plans to show it down the line?

We don't see half enough hearses at shows.

nice car, but it looks very small to be a hearse. What is the blue car in the background??

It will actually take an American casket in the back, it's an Austin A55 van extended at the back, it was a very neat job for it's time. Just painted today so photo's soon.
The car in the back round is a Jaguar 420 and the other one is a 67 Beetle that we've just started restoring today.

fast is not the word!!! looks wonderful. i've always liked that particular series of Austin, especially the six cylinder westminister version. are parts hard to get for them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭S.I.R

hmmm west minister.. haven't seen them since i was at an English car show long ago... cant believe they where once used as police car's...

wonder how long it will be till this classic is on the road

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

Yes we're getting there nicely now, it will be ready for the weekend without fail. Parts are almost impossible to get for them, well body parts anyway.
Here's a couple of photo's of the next candidate.

Bury classic people of course, I'll do a special rate for any classic forum members who'd like to be transported in a classic hearse. Ha ha. Seriously though, it's an undertakers and it'd been owned by the family since new and they wanted it restored. I have plans for my own one so it will be earning it's keep. Check out www.hearseclub.co.uk.

That's mine alright, it's actually Marine Transport, for a while there I thought there was another one. According to the Daimler owners club there's only mine and one other known to them worldwide, the banger racers have killed all the others.

Don't worry about burning bodies, I can get a good price for them for medical research.:D It's the ultimate in recycling, dispose of the body and get paid for it.:)

I saw it when I was collecting parts for me Da's boat engine (almost as old as the hearse!!). It looks brilliant, it totally took me to the fair when i saw it- i couldn't help getting a closer look!! You based there, Junkyard?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

It's my main place, I have a few others just not as big where I keep my "special" stuff.;):)

No MercMad, I didn't get any chrome re-done for this one, in fact I never got any chrome re-done for any car, I usually just replace parts. I often though of getting the gear for re chroming if it was viable I might.

......you'd make a fortune if you did, but I know its serious money because the Environment folk dont like the whole process. You'd probably need a special license blah blah ..........

It looks stunning, you've certainly been busy.

A rechrome would be the icing on the cake, but once it's sound, a polish can work wonders.

Great to see an Irish hearse restored.

Some pics of a similar one in the UK:

The only other Irish hearse that I've seen restored recently is in the UK too:

As for the Daimler, wow - I have photgraphs of that very hearse when it was in its intended use in Tipperary in the late 80's ... unfortunately those are only in the old-fashioned hardcopy style!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

Very few people have any interest in classic hearse's in Ireland, not even undertakers, which is a pity really. But like most things here they only want to see 06 or 07 on the number plate. I'd love to see pictures of my Daimler hearse, you can scan them if you've got a scanner and put them on this site quite easily, if I can help you further let me know. The banger racers have killed nearly all the classic hearses that were here. I remember trying to buy a Vanden Plas 4 litre hearse, which was mint, from one of those gougers a few years ago, no way would he sell it and proceeded to smash the windows as I stood there looking at it. I remember seeing that Dodge on E-bay recently and the restoration of it on the Classic Hearse register magazine, I think the white walls and the red wheel rims are a bit over the top for a hearse though.

I had a look on the internet MercMad and it seems the Americans are the best because they use some toxic substance that's banned in Europe but it gives a great shine. I'd say 4 to 5K euros would set up a decent system which isn't too bad for a start-up price for the equipment. I'd say you'd need to spend some time working at it though.

..........yeah thats true ! It'd be quite labour intensive initially anyway !

That big Dodge Hearse looks fantastic !

Who owns the Roller 1111 ZL that is in active service in Dublin ?

Mind me asking what paint was used ??

Thanks everyone. I used Glasurite clear over straight black, a BMW colour actually as I find it to be the blackest black and undertakers are fussy about that, believe me we do enough of them to know at this stage.

AAAW Savage!!! what a job. fair play to you!! Let us know how the other projects turn out too!!!!
