Firstly is is called the Mirena it is an IUS not a coil. and has been advilible in this country for the last 7 years.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IntraUterine_System
    http://www.ifpa.ie/contraception/ius.html

There is the standard iud which has several types.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrauterine_device

where did you hear about it what makes it new and who makes it ?

There have been no new press realiaes about a new type of iud as far as i can see for the last 5 years.

    pill gives massive headaches
    mirena makes me pregnant
    condoms are soooooooooo unromantic

maybe the snip snap for hubby.

    sorry was off topic.

I am on my second minerva and have had no issues with it what so ever.
I did get pregnant while on the pill.
It sounds like your minerva wasn't fitted correctly or that it shifted or was expelled which is why if you have one you are ment to check it is correctly in place regularly.

As unexpected as your current pregnacy is I hope you much joy of the baby when it arrives and yes a Vasectomy is a simpler proceedure with a lot less
    complications then a Tubal ligation.
Hopefully as a couple you will be able to sort out what is best for you and your family.

got the mirena fitted after our 3th child was born, it never felt right, i was bleeding every day for almost a year, went to doctor a good few times, according to gp it was fitted correctly and then : pregnant ! number 4 ! dont know where to put all those children, but thats beside the point, plenty of love for all of them, but it was a little unexpected.

im sure we work something out with regards birth control.

    thanks

At that stage I would have changed gps or went for a consult with one of the
    family planning clincs.

It happens I know someone who with thier husband wanted 3 children.
3rd time around they had twins which were delivered by c- section and she had her tubes done at the same time.

The clamps on one of the tube slipped and low and behold she is the mother of 5.

Can a baby grow and survive in the womb safely if you get pregnant on the mirena?

Did you not read the leaflet that came with your perscription ?

    http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/mirena_wcp.htm
    2. Intrauterine Pregnancy
In the event of an intrauterine pregnancy with MIRENA®, the following should be considered.

    a. Septic abortion
In patients becoming pregnant with an IUD in place, septic abortion-with septicemia, septic shock, and death-may occur. If pregnancy should occur with a MIRENA® in place, MIRENA® should be removed. Removal or manipulation of MIRENA® may result in pregnancy loss.

    b. Continuation of pregnancy
If a woman becomes pregnant with MIRENA® in place and if MIRENA® cannot be removed or the woman chooses not to have it removed, she should be warned that failure to remove MIRENA® increases the risk of miscarriage, sepsis, premature labor and premature delivery. She should be followed closely and advised to report immediately any flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, cramping, pain, bleeding, vaginal discharge or leakage of fluid.

    c. Long-term effects and congenital anomalies
When pregnancy continues with MIRENA® in place, long-term effects on the offspring are unknown. Because of the intrauterine administration of levonorgestrel and local exposure to the hormone, the possibility of teratogenicity following exposure to MIRENA® cannot be completely excluded. Clinical experience with the outcomes of pregnancies is limited due to the small number of reported pregnancies following exposure to MIRENA®.

Congenital anomalies have occurred infrequently when MIRENA® has been in place during pregnancy. In these cases the role of MIRENA® in the development of the congenital anomalies is unknown. As of September 1999,32 live births following exposure to MIRENA® were reported retrospectively. All but 2 of the infants were healthy at birth. One infant had pulmonary artery hypoplasia and another infant had cystic hypoplastic kidneys.(A sibling of this infant had renal agenesis with no MIRENA® exposure.)

what happened to the extremely high % rate this kinda disturbes me
i'm in a proper monogamous relationship for the first time in a couple years and we were both tested so we didn't have to use condoms so we could soley rely on my mirena
