Ok we are out of the world cup but our foe for many years had a great result yesterday so I think in this time of good will and new found peace we should give Brian Ashtons men our full support. Come on England!

I would, but what happened when they won it 4 years ago, the constant barrage of media publicity lasting for months afterwards to the point of not being able to watch TV without hearing it mentioned, is enough to put me off supporting them.

They aren't the bunch of arrogant cúnts they were in 2003, but the British fans and media are the same as ever, don't forget that.

I want a France - Argentina final. It would be one of the most epic games in the history of rugby.

Strange, I don't remember the constant barrgae on RTE, TV3 or UTV ?

Perhaps you were indulging in the British media?

Why? The rugby they play is effective but excruciatingly boring. England have done well to get this far and should be pleased with it but IMO this hardly justifies supporting their brand of rugby. Think it will be a SA-France final.

well in that case >> don't watch english TV & read english newspapers, easy.

in all fairness if ireland won the WC you never hear the end of it either.

mmm, they stopped the Aussies from playing and won with a far inapt team.If they played open rugby they would have been smashed. As an Irish fan I dont think we can criticize any other team for being boring but successful. We were neither exciting or successful !!

Yes there's no denying that they deservedly won against a poor Australia.
But they were also absolutely thrashed by SA.

Meanwhile I'm still left wondering why the change in political climate should in any way influence who people might support?

I got Scotland in the office sweepstake, Come on Scotland.

JC 2K3, if you don't want to hear the constant self-praise about England, then just don't watch, read or listen the English media. Simple!

I never really understood it when Irish people complain of English supporters constantly gloating and talking about their past achievements when we are far, far worse. I mean England won the last world cup surely seeing as they are currently defending their world cup title that it would be a topic of discussion. Being crowned the best in the world at something is certainly something which people are entitled to talk about with nostalgia.

I mean could you imagine if Ireland achieved anything close to England's achievements in sport we would never ever stop talking about it I mean to this day people still talk about Italia 90 really just sums us up...we are as bad if not worse than English supporters in regards to this.

I'm happy England got this far but I'm supporting France in the semis purely because I like watching good rugby something which this English squad is currently lacking.

    No way!

Argentina or the boks for me.

And i dont get why if we dont support england then we are some crusty old 90 year old IRA man.

Its called a ****ing rivalry!! Wales have it, scotland have it. Would you see austrailia support NZ? No way!

I'm in a really odd position here because of the signature I've had for about the last two years or so.

I've decided I shouldn't get rid of it and if England do well then fair play to them and I'll look deservedly stupid.

To be honest I've been impressed by them but I hate watching their games. It's just such a negative way to go. Serious paint dry stuff.

Still, you go with what you've got and England at the moment have a good pack so what else do you expect from them?

Given last night I'm cheering for France though, they entertain!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭maddness

England had a piss easy route to the semi final and they play the most boring negative ****e rugby you can watch.
Mind you at least they beat the Aussies!!HA ha.
France V Argentina in the final.:)

And teams such as Munster do? Rugby isnt all about it flash its about what works. If they want to go with the 10 men game so be it works for them like wise we [when we show up] like playing the good 15 man game up the midfield

Rugby isnt a sexy sport :P

It may be peacetime, but its definitely pax Britannia!

The reason we cant sing our national anthem or fly our flag away from home at rugby matches is because of England! One more injustice to add to all the others they inflicted on us!

Dont think any self respecting Irishman will be supporting England !

Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it!

    Vive la France!

not always, but it can be played with flair.

I have no ties to England so I'm simply going on what I want to see before me. A lot of the world will be in the same position.

In the semi's I'd rather see

    Fiji
    Tonga
    Wales
    Argentina
    Aussies
    S Africa
    Kiwis
    French

    than England.

I know you have to play to your strengths but everyone can tell the difference between exciting rugby and what England/Munster do(only England are way more boring IMO...they've even stopped scoring tries in big games!!!!)

I went to the France game and while huntig for tickets I hooked up with 2 young English lads- Leicester fans.

Both prepared to blow their budget to get to the Ireland match. We all found tickets from the same source so sat together. they cheered us on just like they were Irish and were as pissed off as I at the end.

This was repeated back in Nantes -were I left the missus who did not
    (wisely in hidsight)
fancy a hit n hope to Paris,on the TGV with no accomodation and the prospect ( as transpired ) of sleepng on the floor at the airport -

She watched it in an Irish bar full of English-as Eng played Tonga the next day there. Here too they all cheered for Ireland. As our nearest neighbour and the past well and truly there, I for one will be cheering them on in the same way they are capable of supporting us.
(I know Wales is closer  )

Have to say, I've never understood why people say that English rugby supporters are arrogant. My experience is that they take their beatings well - generally without whining too much - and enjoy their victories with good grace - far better grace in fact than many other countries.

As for their reaction to their world cup victory, it was fairly restrained. The fact that we beat 'em in the following 6 nations opener made sure it was short lived anyway. :D But compare it with our ludicrous response to the "historic triple crown": hyperbole in the newspapers, overblown dramatic tv specials, smug general celebration and confident predictions of great things in the world cup.

Their brand of rugby is no more boring than that of the Scots, Italians, Argies or SA. There's a strong argument to include our brand of ponderous pre-planned setpiece based approach in that list too. Nothing to be ashamed of - I should know - I support Munster. :D

I guess they're the country everyone loves to say they hate. I love seeing underdogs win and as a result was delighted to see them beat Oz. Yesterday was a great day for rugby.

come on Argentina , they are treated like 2nd class citizens by the conservative RFU -- besides as far as i know England have more rugby players than any other nation -- if the pumas won , syd Miller and the like would be left scrathing there head. I find it much easier to cheer on the english soccer team for some reason !

I hope argentina win tbh, argentina beating france in the final would be just about the best thing ever. I don't really mind the english rugby team, they're boring...but they're a good team too. I just dont wanna see the french win, i hate the french rugby team...probably because of all the beatings they've gave us. I will give it to them for winning against the all blacks, i don't think any other team could have done that, but still...please let argentina win.

nope that was a decision made by the IRFU

and anyway ireland was under British rule (england scotland & wales).

I'll support France against England, they're more entertaining, and they did me a great service by putting out the ABs.

I'll support the Argies against SA, because they're playing out of their skins, and because they're the underdogs...

If its a France - SA final... I'll support the saffers, because I have money on them with a mate to win the final. And because I have a soft spot for this SA team. I don't know why... but its true all the same.

why in gods name would anyone support england, they play boring rugby, think its their god given right to win every trophy because they invent all these sports and are rubbish at them.
another english hype train is about to pull up at the station because they won a match that they wouldnt have evn been playing in if they had had either ireland or wales in their group(two underperforming teams.(beat a messed up australian team but still)

Totally agree, all the media hype around this Irish team has been unbearable, not just for this wc but in the last few years, and what have they won, F**k all.

I recall an add for the Examiner after the Six nations giving away a poster of our 'rugby heroes'

What were they heroes for, f**king up against France ???

I think we should take a look at ourselves before we start harping on about the English media.

I think that would be impossible to call. Ireland were very poor, but they were poor in the six nations and pulled out a very good display against England. If the same happened then I would say Ireland. England are a better team than they were in March though.

Those kinds of questions are stupid and pointless. It's impossible to know.

I won't be supporting England, I will be supporting Argentina. I've always had a grá for them so I'm hoping they do very well.
