I don't see the point of this at all? I take it that the system will be 449 over here?

So for 449, you are getting a downgraded model (with no backward compatability) plus one controller. When you compare this to the deals where you get the 60GB model, 2 games, 2/3 BluRays and an extra controller, you'd be mad to pick up the 40 GB version!

I still don't get way there is no PS2 comparability due to it been done by software emulation not hardware, so where is the cost saving?

Don't know the Irish price yet. I'd be surprised if it's 449. Maybe 419 or 429.

The 60GB packs are unquestionably better value, but lower price is more important to some people than extra value. Value hasn't been Sony's problem at all with PS3, price has been. The 60GBs are also priced to clear..once they're gone, they're gone. Also, by the way, the extra controller is being taken out of the 60GB value bundles in Ireland and the UK (for whatever reason).

Also, there are supposedly 40GB bundles coming at the end of Oct/early Nov. Reportedly a Spiderman3 Blu-ray will be bundled with it from the beginning of Nov, and that there will be Pro Evo and Fifa bundles for not much more.

It wasn't pure software emulation. There was still a PS2 GS inside, and it was heavily connected to other components, so removing it would save chip cost and motherboard complexity.

As a PS3, for PS3 games (and PSone, for that matter), Blu-ray etc. this is a fine machine. In some small ways it may actually be upgraded compared to the earlier models (the FCC filings suggest improved wifi and bluetooth).

I look forward to the day that I get a PS3, but it won't be until I find them worth the money. Even with the 50% off at Tesco recently, I wasn't one bit interested.

    Maybe Xmas 2008 :)

Isint the 60gb model supposed to be reduced in price to €500 aswell ? till they are all sold, and then its the 40gb model only (till next year when the 80gb model arrives)

Price for the 40Gb model in the paper today - €399.99

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 15,239 Mod ✭✭✭✭FutureGuy

We're there any deals mentioned or is it 399 for just the console?

From a console launch point of view, Sony are being very very quiet about it. I wonder how many people will buy one over the next few days not knowing they are getting a downgraded model.

Ad I saw was for Xtravision - no deals/bundles other than €20 in vouchers.

Clearly states its the 40Gb model, but those not up to speed on the 'castration' that Sony have carried out may not be happy.

Apparently the Japanese price converts to €242. Even when they drop the price, they screw Europe.

So if I had a mate in Japan he could get me one sent over and save me a fortune? No issues besides

aside from possible damage, customs could bring the price up and if something goes wrong its not like you can just bring it back. thats the main reason why i bought one today in ireland instead of while im in new york at the end of the month

no worldwide warranty with it no?

IIRC, the warranty only applies to the region it was bought in.

Yeah, but it's still the size of a small boat. If Sony paid me €399 I still wouldn't put one in my living room.

So theres still hope of an 80 gig model for europe?

Thats the one i want. when i get something i dont want to be worrying about space and backwards compatability, which is why i wouldnt get the 40gig in a fit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

why not just change the drive afterwards if you need to???

personally i went for the 60gb just because of the BC , the extra usb ports and the memory slots. even though i may not use them, at least they are there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

I would say any 80GB model - any model fullstop - coming from here on out won't have PS2 BC. So if that's really important to you, get a 60GB model.

If space is the only real concern, though, you might as well get a 80GB and upgrade the HDD yourself. They're quite cheap.

The 40 gig model is a bitg stupid in my opinion. Your paying less but getting a lot less too. I dodnt think they should get rid of the 60 gig one for the 40 and 80 gig ones....

The 60 gig one is perfect.

I really don't get the point of this 40 Gig model - it takes out the backwards compatibility from the PS3 altogether. That instantly cuts out many of the top quality games you can play on it to date.

And I thought that the Backwards Compatibility in the European PS3 was software based anyway - so whay would it be cheaper now?

I feel someone is telling porkies ... But it does seem to have sparked a panic buy of the old 60Gig model (to get them off the shelves).

    Xtravision PS3 Deals

Sony PS3 40GB + EA's Need for Speed Carbon or Godfather Don Edition + €20's of Rental Vouchers - €399

    Sony PS3 60GB + 2 Games* + €20's of Rental Vouchers - €499
    * Either Motorstorm or Resistance Fall of Man + one of theses 3 titles Ridge Racer , Genji or Formula One.

If you don't like any of the titles on offer with these bundles you can take one EA game at half price e.g. Fifa 2008, Skate, and Army of Two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

or just take the games and trade them both in for any game you want in gamestop

edit : just realise you meant you get all 3 at that price. not bad so.
