Hi, I'm going on a double date on Saturday night and we're looking for a nice restraunt in the Balincollig/Macroom/Bandon area. We are up for any type of food/cuisine except for Italian. We were thinking about Treacy's in Ballincollig but none of us have ever eaten there before.

The food at Treacy's is decent, but it is more of a "super pub" than a "nice restaurant".

    Agree.

I was at a small function there last week, and it definitely falls under the pub category, although the food is quite nice.

Quite nice but expensive considering you are in a pub.

Lemongrass next door is average food-wise, it's expensive but it's a nice venue for a group.

Leonardos is another option in Ballincollig.

Raj Gaylord for an Indian in Kerry pike is excellent.

    Mrs Mac,

Treacys in Ballincollig is good. I went in there one afternoon for dinner. Plenty to eat & priced reasonably. But as others have said, more pub than restaurant. The only decent pubs in Ballincollig, in my learned experience, is Treacys, The White Horse (excellent food) & the Oriel House Hotel (Excellent food).

Other than that you can't go wrong in Granvilles, The Castle Hotel etc in Macroom. The new chinese in Macroom is also very good.

I have no experience with Bandon eateries.

    Enjoy...

Thanks for giving me an idea of whats out there! I'm not much of a one for heading out at weekends as i'm usually wrecked from travelling down from Dublin. What sort of place is Lemongrass in Ballincollig? What types of food do they generally do?

Here are some reviews I found for you. http://www.branedy.net/?p=462 . Having not eaten there I don't know what it is like... There is a recommendation for a Thai restaurant opposite the Reel cinema in the above website further down.

Has anyone tried Casino House in Kilbrittain?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Sorry, never heard of it Gary, but will ask my mates at the weekend and will post here Sun Eve if i hear anything back.

We decided on 'the plaza' in Ballincollig for Dinner for the double date Sat eve. will let ye know what the cuisine is like!

The Plaza was a great experience (a bit pricey though) the food was excellend,. I had the smoked Salmon and Garlic Bread and a glass of red. They have live classical muscians every Saturday night. Went to Treacys for a few drinks afterwards and the atmosphere was great. I'll try there for food next week.

Casino is very expensive and need to book well in advance. Theres 2 nice ones in Bandon, Marmetice and Poachers Inn (mostly fish in the latter). Nice Italian also called Sorrentos. Other options include Deasys in Ring (mostly fish again).
Ate in Castle Hotel in Macroom a few times, give it a large bypass in my opinion.
Also would recommend whole heartedly is the White Lady in Kinsale, absolutely beautiful food, very fresh and wholesome, cuisine without over posh attitude.

I forgot about 'the white lady' in Kinsale, went there last year during the summer and their seafood is spectacular indeed!

Aherne's in Youghal is another place for the best seafood cuisine on God's earth.

    Hi,
I'm going to a party in Sam's bar in Ballincollig in a few weeks and just wanted to know what the pub is like? Anyone been there. It has only been taken over by new owners in the last few weeks/months I believe??
I have been in Treacey's a few times; nice bar!

    Thanks,

Is that the one which used to be called The White Horse?

I've been in Treaceys a good few times too but the last time I was in there the floor staff were so rude we walked out and we won't be going back.

I'll second that :) An Sugán in Clonakilty is quite good also, in my opinion we don't have enough seafood restaurants.

Sam's bar is a new bar by the Rebel Bar company near Main Street Ballincollig.

It has taken over from an older bar which closed down so it's known for having slightly dodge clientelle but at the end of the day it's a lovely bar and you can get a decent drink there. Hope you enjoy it. :)

BTW The White Horse is right at the West End of Ballincollig. It's still called the White Horse but with the Managements name attached.

Granvilles, Macroom. Family run. Nicest beef I've tasted in a long time, sourced locally of course. The fish starter crab claws were impressive too i.e. fresh! but it's always had a good rep for fish.

agree re Granvilles, however, if you're looking for GORGEOUS, you can't go wrong with the Auld Triangle in Macroom (the last pub on your right before the cemetry) - my mother's convinced that the gravy has cocaine in it......if you don't feel the urge to lick the plate when you're done, you need to get your taste buds checked...............

I wish they'd vary their menu a bit more though, it hasn't changed much since we first moved to Macroom a few years ago.

I'm afraid recent reports of the Auld Triangle aren't great - parents had lunch in there yesterday and it was appalling......................go to Granvilles........quality seems to be consistently good there

Was in Granvilles on Tuesday night, their new extension is really really nice! My wife had the seafood platter (new to the menu) which was absolutely gorgeous. I had the herb crusted hake which was really tasty too...but will def be getting the seafood platter next time we're in :D

They've two new waitresses there too, both of whom were really good.

I agree. The menu is the same for years and years. Very few healthy options.

Blairs Inn in Cloghroe is excellent. Food is consistently good and there is something for everyone on the menu. Might be a little pricey for some people though. I have no affiliation to Blairs, just a satisfied customer.

I went to Treacys two days ago for dinner. It was quiet at the time, but we had to wait 10 minutes before anyone served us, eventhough there were lots of staff about?
The food itself was not great. I had the cannelloni which was not nice. It didnt resemble cannelloni and the pasta was all hard on the outside (as if if was there few a few days and just heated up). €12.20 it cost me, not worth that at all.
Even the porcelin bowls for the ketchup and mayonaise were chipped??

Wasnt happy with the service and the food.
    Wont be going back there.

I had a very similar experience in Treacy's some months back (check my post in this thread above) and I have not gone back since. There is no structure at all to their table waiting, we stood for over 10 minutes with our baby waiting on a table, when we went to sit at a table one of the waitresses was extremely rude to us for skipping an "invisiable queue" and made us feel quite uncomfortable to be honest. Instead of standing our ground and complaining we just took our business elsewhere.

I think that because they are usually quite busy they think that they can treat their customers anyway they want, this is completely unacceptable and I for one will not put up with it.

id second the poachers inn in bandon. Pink Elephant in Kilbrittain v. good. Someone mentioned an siugain in clon and ive eaten there a few times due to its reputation but never been wowed. in and around clon theres loads of good restraunts though fish wise deasy's and a place in rosscarberry, non fish try inchadoney, dunmore or anywhere in clon, all are good really.

The old triangle in macroom is also very good,I called in there once a month on the way to tralee and it was spot on all the time, they do a great take on the irish stew and is well worth a visit

Granvilles is a better than the Triangle in my view. The plaza is decent in ballincollig as is treacy's. Blairs is ok but a bit if the owners there it can be awkward especially if your not from around. He's all questions and can be annoying if you are in company and just want a bite to eat without telling your life story.

Blairs yes have to agree . always remember going into one afternoon the place had a few customers but the boss nearly had a stroke as we had 2 kids with us!!!! Made us feel really uncomfortable and kept an eye on them the whole time we were there as did I BTW !!Was told by a local afterwards that he HATES kids lol

Treacys is good but not as busy as it used to be. Most places go through a kind of honeymoon period after they first open and when a new place opens, they tend to move on. There is still a good atmosphere there (most of the time) but it's not what it used to be (in my opinion).
