Eating Disorder of Sorts

I read a very good article in Cosmopolitan when I was away recently, my Mum left the magazine open and strategically placed to make sure I would read it.

It was titled "Eating Disorder of Sorts" and it went on to explain that you can have an eating disorder and eat perfectly well i.e. not starve yourself or binge and throw up. Basically I love my grub but I have an eating dosorder according to this article.

Every morsal or food I consume is noted in a diary and I will not eat something that I will feel guilty about eating. I count calories on everything and will not eat something if I am unsure about the calorie content. I punish myself if I pig out during the week and I panic if I feel an ounce of fat on my body.

I think if I did not have a fear of vomiting I would be bullimic, I also worry that one day I could become anorexic as I cannot bear the thought of becoming fat. Would anyone else consider that I have an eating disorder???

Tbh it doesnt sound like you have a healthy relationship with food. Food is not bad, no one food is good or bad really, its all to do with the context of your diet. There are certain criteria with regard to the diagnosing of eating disorders but thats not to say that just because you are not explicitly one or the other doesnt mean that there is not an issue to be addressed.

Honestly, the best thing to do, if you are concerned about your relationship with food would be to contact bodywhys www.bodywhys.ie. My experience with them has been very positive.

Sorry i forgot to add that from your behaviour as you described it, i would totally recommend getting some help and dealing with it. Feeling bad about eating and anally controlling your intake of food is not *normal*, and it s not something that is enhancing your quality of life or your health either for that matter.

I have had a troubled relationship with food in the past and tbh it was only recently when i started making a concious effort to eat clean and well that it resurfaced. The approach i took was to make an effort to deal with the underlying issues rather than dealing specifically with food. if you want to chat feel free to pm me.

Claire, I think you should sit down with your mum and have a heart to heart with her.

She clearly cares about you and to be honest, its obvious that you have an eating disorder.

Claire, first off thank you for being so honest, it's not easy to be open about these issues.

But more importantly, no-one here on the forum is in any position to tell you whether you do or don't have an eating disorder, that's oemthing that you'll have to discuss with your GP or a psychologist, preferably one that specialises in eating disorders.

The link that ali.c provided to bodywhys.ie includes a list of therapists and counsellors who are trained in this particular area and who would be better able to advise you.

The best of luck with this, I truly hope it works out. Unfortunately I'm going to have to close the thread for now while I have a wee think about it as I'm not sure if it's an area that we can safely allow to be discussed to the full extent (as much as it pains me to do so). We can discuss ED's in general, but we can't diagnose them.
