Wasn't sure where to put this. It could have been in business, commuting & Transport or travel & holidays.

Often overlooked due to Mick O'Learys strong presence.
Very interesting history of the man and the company for anyone who's read it will know.
He leant his name to the company that has become synonymous for cheap flight in Europe, and has become one of the most recognisable Irish companies in the world.

It's always sad when people die... but I don't know anything about this guy really.

    RIP none the less.

Wait for the half page ads tomorrow with a crudely drawn coffin and massive type announcing "We're burying fares! Vladivostock €1, Frankfurt (Beauvais) €1...."

I mean they generally hop on the back of any misfortune or misery to launch a seat sale, why should this be any different?

I was *lucky* enough to meet him on one occasion, while doing some work in his office wing in the house in Celbridge, very nice man, I'd never met or seen him before, but you would sort of know he was da boss, I addressed him as Sir for some reason, he asked me politely what i was doing and we had a chat about his bulls, If you've ever seen a prized bull you'd understand, they're some beasts.

Oh yeah I remember why I addressed him as sir, apparently one day the guy that was hired before me, mistakenly knocked on the door of his private residence and was greeted with a shot gun and told to get off his land or he be shot..!! He was told never to come back and was fired from his job.

    feckin tool

Unlikely given that O'Leary was a close friend and Dr Ryan was somewhat of a mentor to him.

I did some work on Lyons also. Never met him, but did meet some of the family.

There a story about the bulls. On a show day, one of the guys would spend all morning cleaning and preening, shampooing and rinsing, brushing, scrubbing and so on the get the bull to perfection. They'd put him in the trailer, drive to the show only for the bull to have, eh, soiled itself on the way. So cleaning and preening, shampooing and rinsing ... you get the idea.

All the other farmers would just use a power hose and they'd be done.

He would have had more cows than bulls. One can't breed a top pedigree Charolais herd without the cows also! ;)

So close to LOL'ing it there. Luckily I'm in a library.

RIP though, he founded a great company!

They are successful, I wouldn't use the word great, they are a sneaky backhanded shower, IMO.

They cut air-fares massively, allowing the working class to travel yearly for the first time. Aer Lingus always insisted that fares could not be cut, but Ryanair showed them.

I'm not saying they are a bad thing, or have no merit.

It's all the stealth charges you find out about as you go along, it's often not worth it, especially when you factor in how frustrating it is to be deceived.

Having read and listened to Denis and Michael rabbit on about TR and what it means to be an entrepreneur etc, having had direct experience of all 3 of them and their MO, I would like you to spare a thought for all the divorces, separations and other forms of broken relationships that have stemmed from their accumulation of wealth at any price, at the expense of their employees.

Acknowledged successful entrepeneur and here's someone blaming the employer for broken employees, whatever next?

I dont know, you get what you pay for. People expect some world class service from them, but thats not what they're about. Plus these "stealth" charges...well, 1) they not the only place that them, and 2) its easy to get out of them(basing it on luggage, insurance charges).

Surely hiring Michael O'Leary was Tony's biggest mistake (until a few weeks ago)

Not quite sure why you're bumping this as he died six years ago.

The house he formerly owned is on the market. Judging by the photos probably the finest privately-owned home in the country.
