What is the situation with the making of the HOBBIT movie ?

I thought, Peter Jackson was considering making it ?

It is going to be made, as far as I know, but I've heard Peter Jackson say that he wasn't interested in directing. That could change, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yeah but then there were BIG issues between himself and New Line Cinema (who own the rights) - they were a bit peeved at his little lawsuit against him and the head honcho didn't want to ever see Jackson near his studio again.
I think that element was resolved but Jackson had probably lost interest by then.

Sam Raimi is the name being branded around. If it's not in production by the middle of next year the rights revert back to Saul Wentz company and they have said that they want Jackson and no one else in the directrs chair.

Is there no official line on the situation on any of the related websites ?

I think Peter Jackson is the man for the job. After all he did a wonderful job on the rest.

As ixoy said, jackson had a big falling out with new line as he claimed they didnt pay him what he was due from the LOTR films. (I think he was entitled to a larger profit share) They were seeking other directors, but alot there was alot of negative backlash (from fans, LOTR cast and tolkien family) and press with doing this so new line shelved plans.

However the situation was resolved and in recent months, there was a change in some of the senior team in new line (sorry cant find the article with names) and one of the new big wigs is a big fan of jackson and would like to see the hobbit made so things started to look rosey again.

however thats the last i have heard of it. Jackson has some other projects lined up in the next few years that afaik, he must complete before he can take on anything else.

After the hames he made of Return of the King (a comparatively terrible end to a classic trilogy) I would prefer that he did not direct it.

I think The Hobbit lends itself much better to movie conversion than the The Lord of the Rings, so as long as it's not a complete ass directing it, then it should be fine

Sure it was Jackson himself that seemed like a newbie at the time of production of the first movie. Dont get me wrong, i liked brain dead and all, but its only in hindsight that you can see he did a fantastic job with LOTR.

    Raimi though...no.

If they're going to torture hobbits and burn the shire properly I'll be interested in this. If not, count me right out.
