    Hi all,

just started doing this course and have to say enjoying it and doing pretty well, the only problem I have is that I need to find decent companies that I can do my work placement with for 12 weeks starting from next June, our Lecturer doesn't recommend US Multi-nationals as he feels they won't take any interest in you, just wondering if anyone has done this course via FAS and got decent experience from a company & could you recommend companies to try?

    Thanks

    Snake

Did it last year. A good few of us did the placements in collages, hospitals or with Concern. And most who did usually got kept on, as apposed to us that went to private companies. The last instructor Micheal had a good few contacts with these sort of places. If it's Brian who's doing it now, ask him if Micheal left any information about this.

I did this course too in 2004. I didnt get any work placement due to a mix up. The company that gave a few of us placements never called me back so i assumed i didnt get it, and as it was coming up to christmas i took a job working as a storeman to tide me over for christmas money, only to find out that instead of calling ME, the placement called fas to tell them i got a placement! I took the storeman job in the end cause id already agreed to do it, but still, it didnt stop me getting decent work in the end. After about 2 years working in tech support with Eircom and HP im now working as the IT admin for a govt body...all thanks to that Fas course! :)

Michael is no longer the lecturer there then?

    @ OP
TBH a lot of people will have to start of with the big Multi National Companys i.e. HP. Client Logic is also something similar to HP from what ive heard.

The 1st level support jobs in some places are soul destroying (Im not joking) after a while but its the only way some people can get a start, and the majority of people are looking to move onwards and upwards as soon as possible.

Even some people straight out of college end up doing a 6 month to 1 year stint in tech-support, regardless of what avenue of IT they have been studying.

Plus what your looking to do is get work experience, and if you can get work experience through US Multi Nationals then by all means go for it, you may even get paid for it.

But if your dead set against it, try some of the places listed below....

Some places to try would be:

Charitys / Community and Local Council Offices
    Colleges / Universitys
    PC Repair stores
IT departments in your Mam & Dad's workplace
    Hospitals
Businesses, local to you (Less distance to travel, this will become a major plus)

Thats just a few I can think of at the moment but I will post more as they come to me.

    Hi All,

Thanks for coming back, yeah Michael moved on think he got a promo or something. @ Varkov your right our lecturer is Brian, was he on the course when u did it? I'll ask Brian if Michael left any contact info.
So for you lads who worked in HP or Client Logic what did was your workload made up of? Are they willing to take people on from FAS for work experience? As for charities can they and will they keep you on?

I'm living in Lucan so I suppose city centre or local would be ok.
Thanks to you all for your advice.

Chances are anywhere in the public sector will keep you on after. And you wont really gain to much relevant experience if you did the pacement in HP. Im there at the moment and its mostly bespoke support.
