Best and easiest way to completely wipe a harddrive?

    Hi,

    I had trouble with my Vista Desktop, and then attempted to re-install Vista. Unfortunately this was impossible for some reason.

    So I installed XP to backup all my old data onto another external HD, which just finished.

    Now I want to completely wipe the Disk clean. What is the best way or (free) tool to do it?
