I turned on the computer and tried logging into guest, I got a message saying the computer could have a problem and to contact a repair person if the problem persisted. When it logged in everything was lost, it had rest itself back to when I first purchased it, asking if I wanted to take a tour of XP and so forth. Everything was lost and I freaked for a second. I turned off the computer and logged in again and everything was back to normal. What might been wrong? Is it some sort of virus and if so what might it be.

Reminded me anyhow I have a few more pic's to back up.

Perhaps its the first time you used a particular profile or a particular profile is corrupt.

If you logged in as guest you wouldn't have a profile, I'd imagine. Certainly not the profile a normal user would have, ie. your settings wouldn't be there.

I am actually using the guest account as my main one, as the other one slows down the net for some reason. I have all the things I need on it, files, pic's and games. The thing that worried me most was everything disappeared from the start and programs. Everything was back to default settings, wallpaper changed to blue and so on. I sort of remember the message saying something about the security settings of the PC and a count down timer started from 30 secs until it started up. Then the asking for a tour and so on, switched off and restarted and everything was back, have kept it on standby since.

The EXACT same thing happened me before about 3 years ago. I turned on my PC and EVERYTHING was gone.. all files had dissapeared, desktop wallpaper gone.. everything, and all settings reset.

I was using Limewire at the time, and I was convinced that the authorities had somehow broken into my PC and nicked all my files for evidence of my illegal downloads activity he heh..

I nearly had a meltdown.. it was all very dramatic. BUT, everything miraculously arrived back in it's place the next day, phew! Of course I got rid of Limewire immediately and never had any probs again... but I was convinced for quite some time (before I became all knowledgable about PC's like) that the men in suits were coming for me

Could this maybe be the same thing that's happened you?

EDIT: Sounds like you just need a clean up on you're main profile in order to speed up your browsing.. do you use spybot, adaware etc? I'd say check your msconfig as well for any evils that might be lurking. Your internet speed doesn't vary from user to user, that's whatever processes are going on in the background affecting it.
