Plasma above a fire? yes or no

I have a 50" Philips plasma (50PFP5532D) on my chimney breast and currently below it is an electric fire sitting into the fireplace which is originally a real fire with back bolier. The top of the fire opening to the base of the TV is about 1m and there is no mantle piece as the chimney breast is an exposed brick finish.

I was looking to start using the fire and get rid of the electric one, as long as the TV will be ok.

I've read that you can light a fire and tape a thermometer to the wall where the TV is and as long as it doesn't exceed 32C it should be ok. However the person who owned the house before us has thrown out the grate and front and other parts of the fire which means i will have to go out and buy new ones but that would be a waste of money if the heat exceeds 32C and means I cant use the fire.

So I was wondering has anyone done this and what results have you gotten, is it highly likely to reach this temp? I would consider installing a "floating" mantle piece shelf below the TV if this would help.

Or am I crazy, will the TV be affected? I cant find anything in the manual about it and am also not sure if it will affect the waranty.

    Thanks,

    Dave.

Over a real fire with no mantle , I would say definitely not , its not just the heat either , theres smoke and fume damage from a real fire to worry about as well.

Ive seen plasmas work ok over gas and electric fires , but they dont throw out as much heat as a real fire and you dont have the smoke/fume issues either.

Another thing to keep in mind with hanging them over a fire is the comfort factor , if your going to be constantly looking up at the TV it can be very uncomfortable , try sitting on your sofa and staring at the place where its gonna be for 10 mins , if your neck starts to get stiff then forget it.

Watching it for any extended amount of time under those conditions would be unbearable.
