Maplins or any generic PC supply shop have them in stock. Given that you mention an old iMac and an iBook, you will be asking for a Firewire 400 Cable; it should be about a tenner.

    You'll need one of these.

Start the iMac while holding down the T key until you see a firewire logo on the screen. Then connect it via the firewire cable to the iBook and it should appear like an external Firewire hard drive on the Finder.

    Good luck !

I can't wait until i have to use the firewire connection on my imac someday. Since i am nearly a year using mac i still feel new for not using it yet and/ or sometimes i feel like an idiot not knowing what it is for ( fully). Is it mainly for high speed downloads ? & do many of you guys use it most days and for what do you use it for ?

Question -- If one was backing up a lot of files ( like itunes and iphoto, which i have not done yet and it is getting bigger and bigger) would a firewire cable be better and quicker ? --- Or --- am i just lost and don't know what the hell i am talking about and in that case the best advise i can give about firewire ( to save face) is the next time you are in a nightclub ( if that is your scene) is to ask the dj for this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTqiYf0Whl8 ( it is awesome in a night club, not so good in day light) --- sorry about the rant, cant help myself

Unless you have a 1Gb network switch connecting your macs then they operate at 100Mb - fine for most things granted.

But when you need to transfer a lot of files quicker then simply connecting your macs together with a firewire cable allows you to use the connections as a local area network. Check out the network section in system preferences. You assign the ports IP addresses just like the ethernet ports.

Firewire is a full duplex system - it can send and receive simultaneously - so its quicker than USB 2 for sustained transfer. Therefore firewire external drives are more desirable than USB. In Target Disk mode - afaik - the donor Mac simply enables a firewire disk connection as opposed to network connection. This can be very useful for:

Getting files from an iMac or eMac when the display is dead.
Installing MacOS X from DVD to a Mac that doesn't have a DVD drive - very useful !
Simply transferring files from an old Mac to a new Mac.

    Heh heh . . . you're a virgin :D
