Ok, on my way to a gig we nearly crash stuff gets a bit thrown around and we thought it wasnt that bad... untill we open the boot.

one of the knobs on my mesa 2:90 power amp broke off (Super glue will fix that easily) but then I noticed the fuse socket on front of the power amp fell off and the fuse was out too. You say "no probs just put the fuse on that little socket and pop it back in" BUT

for some reason it isnt staying in! It just pops out straight away.. :( I dont know is there another part missing or what? Buts its annoying and a big gig coming up too! any suggestions?

Thats the power amp incase some dont know

^Oh the Studio was on my lap man! Shes WELL safe! ;)

Its only the power amp! Pfft I never plan on selling that anyway!

Its actually fine, I just think Im missing one little piece which holds the fuse. So Im gonna take out that imput and check it out. Then find a replacement!

theirs no cosmetic damage like! So your safe haha!!

    Ah that's grand.

But in all seriousity, you don't want to be snapping off the controls. Rack gear is very vulnerable to this, with the straight face and exposed knobs.

It's not as bad on a boogie as most amps (the pots are individually PTP'd to the main board rather than on their own PCB), but yeah, get yourself a rack case ASAP, and chalk this one up as a learning experience that could have been worse.

I've seen an amp recently which got a bash on the faceplate, snapped a couple of pot stalks, but cracked the control PCB inside as well. Nasty and VERY expensive to sort out.

Was it yourself who was looking for the fuse holder before and I suggested Maplins?

Anyways, check there. Failing that just try bodge something up to keep the fuse in. :)

Oh I believe it! I ordered this case:

    What are Pot Stalks?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

The tone/volume on your amp are potentiometers (pots). The stalk or shaft comes out of the pot and through the front plate, and the control knob is fixed onto it.

Break the stalk and you'll be replacing the whole pot. Not so big a job on a Mesa/Boogie, but not something you want to be doing on cheaper amps, as you can see from these shots of a Marshall JVM.

An awful lot of work is needed to get at the sub-board and replace a broken pot.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

So Voodoo its basicly the little stick which the knob goes onto? Thats the stalk?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

Yeah, the stalk or the shaft. You can see it here:
    512px-Potentiometer.jpg
You didn't snap it off did you?

For the short-term, if you can't find a replacement fuse holder, use the gigger's friend......duct tape. :)

By the way instead of super glueing on the knob you can just put a screwdriver in between the gap and make the gap bigger then put your knob back on and it'll fit without super glue.

Eh....probably not a good idea holding a semi-broken fuse in with your hand, unless you want to kill yourself.

A fuse is a part of the circuit taking the full current of the amp at that point.

The pictures are too blurry to make out what the problem is, but it shouldnt be anything serious. You've either broken the fuse-holder, or done something to the socket the fuse holder screws into. Or both. And possibly broken the fuse itself by the looks of it.

They should all be cheap-ish and easy to find.

BUT, from the sounds of it, just step back and get someone else to sort it out for you. Seriously, from the sounds of it, you shouldn't be trying to fix it yourself until you learn a little more about the workings of amps and the dangers of electricity. Especially not if it's the fuse socket that needs replacing, I wouldn't at all be happy with you lifting the lid of the amp.

Drop it in to a tech or good guitar shop and get them to sort it out for you.

That sucks about the Poweramp, had the exact same thing happen with my Mesa 50/50. One thing I learned while fixing it was when that fuse cap takes a knock it can push the receiving end of the fuse holding enclosure into the amp a little which means that the fuse wouldnt be making contact with it, even if you were holding the fuse by hand.

I was never able to find a replacement fuse cap but since most of the cap was intact I just hooked both sides together inside the amp which isnt the most ideal situation but it works fine. If you do come across replacement caps let us know where :D

Exactly!! Did yours keep sliding out when you tried to hold it in place?

My cap is fully in tact and could you possibly go into more detail with your way of doing it? Because I might do that seeing as I have no money!

    Yes mine kept sliding out.

    Lucky b*stard! Those caps are impossible to find :D Moving on, heres how I fixed mine;

Step 1 - I unplugged my poweramp, didnt want to die or anything.

Step 2 - Opened up poweramp.

Step 3 - I examined the fuse reciever and noticed mine was being pushed out of the tunnel everytime I tried to insert the fuse at the front so the fuse wasnt making proper contact.

Step 4 - I removed the fuse reciever from the tunnel, took what was left of my fuse cap (still had the metal part, just the plastic part had broken off), placed the fuse in the cap and joined it with the fuse reciever (the two hooks on the bottom off the cap connect to the reciever). Thats it, its worked fine ever since.

I would urge you however if at any point you dont feel confident with what you are doing take it to a tech. Tube amps are very repairable and a fix for this wouldnt cost too much.

Just as an addendum to that ^
Bear in mind that amps can have dangerous (potentially lethal) voltages stored in their capacitors even months/years after being unplugged.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

    ^^
In response to step 4: So once the hooks connect to the reciever it wont slide out?

Also thanks for that! Gonna open it up now!

    ^Should I wear rubber gloves?

    jus dont go killing yourself

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

    update:

ok, opened it up. A little rod seems to be soldered to the fuse imput from the power switch pot?

Will i have to break that and then remove the fuze socket so i can investigate it?

**Also it seems like my fuse is just been pushed out?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

    UPDATE:

the fuse holder pits in now!

BUT it doesnt hold when the fuse is out in too! So Im begining to think that the clips in the holder are busted! :(

It works when I have pressure on it! But when I take that away its gone!!!

    Any suggestions now??
