Is it possible to sell Irish shares Short? IE sell them before they go down then buy them back cheaper at a later date? If so, How and Where can I do it?

you won't be able to do it on line, but you should be able to do so through a broker, if you build up soem form of relationship.

teh danger from broker's side is, that if you sell, he must deliver. Therefore if you cannot buy back to close the sale before the end of teh trading period, broker must buy and deliver.

You can short them quite easily via spread betting. Shorting the banks has been very successful for me since the beginning of the year.

Spreadbetting would be the easiest route.
Alternatively, sell short the Irish ETF,you sell the shares, the broker arranges for a stock loan, so he can deliver to the counterparty, you buy back your shares to close the position, and the shares go to whomever you borrowed shares from.

options would be another method. you have to be careful what you short though, most larger companies like CRH are well diversified abroad. it is a risky strategy though as although you maybe right 12 months from now you could be bounced out of your position especially if you are leveraged.

I would suggest you've missed the boat on this, ISEQ shares are down 20% on a month ago. They're discounting a fairly significant Irish economic slowdown already.

you can do it on IGIndex but if you really want to do it I would buy some "put" options instead of going outright short. I've had a look at the charts of the ISEQ and it seems to be breaking back up above some decent levels. Also I think the worst of the bad news re housing market etc is priced into the bank shares which have such a big weight on the index

CFDs through Davy's or similar will allow you to do this (risky though)
