Going to be in Los Angeles for Christmas, has anyone any good recommendations for nice hotels, mid range price, fairly centrally to stay in for two days (xmas & stephen's day)

    Cheers

Are you aware what a horrible place LA is? Might be better to stay somewhere a little bit up or down the coast or at least at one of the LA beaches.

I am just back from LA and I stayed in the Raddisson at LAX, nice hotel, VERY handy for the airport (free 5 min shuttle to teminal) and about 20 mins drive from Hollywood. If you haven't been to Hollywood before...brace yourself, it's a kip!

    I agree with keelf.

LA is a hole! I'm just back from a holiday which included 3 days in LA.
We stayed at the Sheraton in Universal City for two of those nights. We ventured to LA city and Hollywood and would not recommend either! Complete waste of time! And Hollywood is a dive! Would be far better moving out of the city to one of the beach areas for a few nights.

We also spent a night at the Radisson at LAX and as an airport hotel I would also highly recommend it!

My advice towards LA, stay away from it!

What's Universal City like Ms Inquisitive?

Nice to see the old familiar replies to LA threads.. OK we know most people think it's a kip, but people will still keep visiting - no need to point this out in every thread!

I'd recommend the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica. It's a great hotel with a really helpful concierge who can recommend things to do, places to see and will book tours, restaurants, print out directions for you etc.. It's quite a snazzy joint but we got a great deal on expedia.

Santa Monica is pretty cool too and lovely to hang out at night time. I'd only stay there if you've a car though and can pop into Hollywood etc... to see the sights during the day.

LA has cleaned itself up alot in the last 5 years or so but it is still one if not the most gimmicky, tacky city in the states imo. Hollywood is much nicer now than when i first ventured down there in 1999  though there are still scumbags lurking just off the main drag.

I agree with those suggesting santa monica, brentwood is a lovely area too.

Universal City us just a mini version of Universal Themeparks in Orlando but still definitely worth a visit. There's not too many rollarcoasters in it but I could definitely recommend the Mummy Ride, Jurrasic Ride and the studio tour!

For those that have no interest in theme parks the Citywalk is well worth a visit at night-time, this topped the Orlando version in my opinion! The place is mental busy at night time and there appears to always be a wait for tables but there's plenty of ways to kill an hour there!

you didn't recommend waterworld (best show in the park imo)

Universal Hollywood is where all the movies/tv shows are filmed (its a working movie set as well as a theme park) the sets of all the westerns, jaws, psycho, king kong, war of the worlds etc etc etc are still there to view. You might even catch them filming something like desperate housewives on the backlot. Universal is a must see when in LA

We're going for 4 nights in Feb staying at Hilton Universal City, just wanted an idea of the location as it's really the theme park we're interested in.
Have heard a few bad reports about downtown LA so will have to be careful not to stray off the beaten track ;)

Anyone done Six Flags? Any use?
