Mirroring you imac's HD

I got one of the new 24" iMacs recently with the 500GB drive. I've just picked up a FW800 Western Digital 500GB drive and want to set it up so as it's a match of the iMac. I dont really care about incremental backups, just want both drives to be a mirror of each other.
I'm also in the process of getting a second external HD to do a full weekly backup too that will go in a safe (I run a photo business - need to be sure I dont lose punters photos).
So, what's the best option for mirroring onto the external HD day to day - should I RAID in disk utility or is there a good app out there? Ideally it needs to be completely automatic. Obviously Leopard will solve all of this with Time Machine, but I need something in the meantime. The WD drive comes with retrospect express BTW.

    Thanks
    Jimbo

Hook up the ext hd and then just use the Disk Utility to make an image of the machine and save it to the external.

yep, so this solves the weekly backup task, but I'd like to get it to actively mirror, i.e. when I add/change a file to the imac, it gets copied straight to the ext HD. Thanks for the input :).

I think in that case you'd need to set up as a Raid. i Myself use an app called superduper and just have it set up to daily backup. It uses smartbackup to only amend files that were altered since previous day so its pretty quick.

This way if i install something and decide by the end of the day its a bit buggy i can restore back to my position form previous day. IF i understand correctly a raid would mean the same install happens on both drives.

Has anyone setup rsync to do daily/hourly backups of the full disk?
Currently I backup my complete user account to two remote locations, one in my apartment and one on a remote server using rsync and cron but I would like to mirror the whole disk locally.
Anyone done this? What directories do you need to exclude etc?

    BTW This is the cronjob:
    0 * * * * rsync -q -a -e ssh --delete --exclude="Google Desktop/" --exclude="zzz/Library/Application Support/Azureus" --exclude="Caches/" --exclude="Cache/" --exclude="Movies/" --exclude="Downloads/" --exclude=".Trash/" --exclude=".cpan/" /Users/zzz zzz@remote:/mnt/backup/zzz
    Any comments?
