    Hi,

I'm about to start going the Gym again and wanted to ask this.

My stocmack is a little bigger then i would like, not massive or anything but i'd like to lose some weight there. People are telling me to do Situps. Will that work or will that just make it muscle?

Should i do more running / cross trainer to lose some weight frist?

any help on this would be great
    thanks.

No it won't. Do us a favour and tell them to stop talking out their ass and perpetuating these myths.

Diet and exercise will help your abs show through as a result of fatloss.

as trib says doing sit-ups will only strengthen and build your abs.

unless you actually go on an eating plan for fat loss you will never see the abs

you cannot remove fat from just one area of your body

Sit ups will help. The will build the muscles in your stomach and as muscle burns fat you will lose weight. However, this needs to be aided by a serious fat loss plan including upping levels of cardio to get your heart rate at a decent level to burn off the fat from around your middle (and everywhere else). Diet obviously has a lot to play in this, you need to cut down on the saturated fats in order to compound the exercise you're doing, in time you will see results.

    agree with above 100%

the only thing I'll add though is that heavy compound lifts like squats and deadlifts use the abs aswell and you'll put on more muscle overall with these. This will help with you overall goal of getting a flatter stomach.

if you have never done them get someone experienced to show you correct form and start with a handy weight.

This is the lift where most people can shift a lot of weight relatively easily and tend to try and heap on the weight to impress their friends and forget about form then.

    great exercise

So how much of a part does dietry fat play in getting fat? Some say its carbs that store the blubber and that fat doesnt.Which is it?I eat quite a lot of f ats in my diet and i'm less fat then when i pretty much cut them out entirely.

It's complicated. Your body will use what is available, and despite fats being far more calorie dense and effectively a more "efficent" form of energy for us to take in it is also slower to digest and untilise than carbs.

Carbs are used as stored energy in the muscles as glycogen, fat is not. Carbs are used by the brain and other organs for energy, fat is not.

So, all said and done, carbs should really be kind, right?

Not really. At it's most basic level adding bodyfat boils down to overall calorific intake. It's estimated that you only need to be about 100 calories a day over your usage and your body will be storing fat. How harsh is that?

BUT, if you get your body into a fat burning mode, where carbs are very restricted, it's switched to fat as a main energy source and you are taking in some decent levels of healthy fats but still running a calorie defecit then your a fat burning machine.

Neeeeeever cut out the fats from your diet, especially if you're a lifter - they provide the cholesterol necessary to make androgenic hormones. No dietary fat = reduced test. Personally I would say that carbs (especially refined and processed ones) have a bigger impact on fat gain than good dietary fat.

I'm the same as you, just looking at carbs makes me puff up like a balloon, but a high fat, high protein, low carb diet strips fat off me faster than.. well something really fast. Fats keep you more satiated, they're kinder to your metabolism and don't play havoc with your hormones. As long as you're eating within your calorie quota, getting fats in is more important than carbs.
