Apple Jam in slow cooker?

I have found that by placing peeled and cut-up apples into the slow cooker for some 8 hours, I get a watery but ready jam, even without sugar.

Is it really a good way or are there problems I didn't notice? And, will it hold its own when stored for long in jars?

The principal erason I want to do this is economy. The usual jam requires several hours on the stove, and that's a lot of electricity.
