    Hi
Need some clues or pointers folks if you can help .

When i am watching a programme on sky i have noticed of late, a ringing, whistling kind of shrill coming from the tv ?
Anyone had this before or am i going mad ? Its becoming really annoying .A constant shrill in my ear , now i have noticed it ,it gets worse on me.
It doesnt seem to be as bad when i am not watching sky , but still there.
Could the tv be on the way out ?

I've got two CRT TVs humming away in this house -- one is about two years old; the other thirteen. It seems to calm down after a while though. I've found that gently tapping the TV seems to make it disappear

Hi Andrew, Ah '77 what a year.
The ringing sound you hear could be the line out transformer in the TV or it may be the scan coils. Does it start when you turn on the set and fade away as the TV 'warms up', or does it 'ring' when you switch to the scart input ?. Or maybe when the aspect ratio changes on the RGB input ?. If it's the scan coils, I had this same problem myself, and will 'go away' after a while, well not entirely go away though, but it will happen less often. If it gets really bad you'll have to consider leaving the set in for a repair, or to be more precise a 'McGyver' as you cant actually 'repair' the coils. The age of the set has to be considered before you do decide on this though.

cheers folks for the replies, it doesnt seem to have the noise when i turn on the tv but after a few minutes it starts and then continues,it does my head in and makes the viewing annoying now that i have copped the noise.
Tv is about 3 years old, a philips brand and it hasnt caused me a minutes problem since i bought it ,
I will root around with the cables and see what i can do, other than that i will take the sledgehammer to it to see if i can fix it:D

Not sure the sledge will really help your veiwing pleasure. It'll certaintly stop the ringing ok, permanently! The symptoms you describe sugest it's the scan coils allright, some engineers will attempt to apply superglue to the gaps in the coils (dependant on accessability) to stop them 'ringing'. DO NOT attempt to try this yourself, there's lethal voltages flying aroud in there, even when the TV is off and unplugged there's tens of thousands of volts stored in the EHT in the tube. Have a word with your local service centre, and ask them about this. It'll still only be a temporary fix, but a three year old TV is still to young to scrap yet.

I had a similar problem with my TV. It seemed when I wiggled (very technical term !!) the scart leads at the the back it seemed to stop for a while then return. After a while I got a LCD anyway so it doesn't bother me now !
