ok then ive a XPS m170 laptop with a 2.13 ghz centeino "which at the time was the dogs " i also used to have a gig of ram and winxp pro sp2 . so anyhow i upgraded to vista ulta and added a new 2gig of ram .the laptop was never to great for rencoding but i used it once or twice and the normal downloaded video , which was 700mb appox , in avi or kvcd would take between 1and a half hours or at a max 2 and a half hours to encoding into mpeg2 DVD format , Anyhow now since i installed VISTA Ulta, its taking me up to 5 hours .im using nero vision 4 with all the latest upgrades and updates .I. increased my page file and reset my VISTA settings to best performance and tried to speed up vista best i can i was wondering if vista trottles the cpu even when its needed ?? any help would be great SIGNED The Vista virgin

Encoding is not only based on hardware speed, but the codec speed as well. Vista has many built-in codecs, however, they are ****e when it comes to encoding and compressing.

Try installing the K-Lite codec pack and then try again. Also - there are many other software packages like WINAVI that are much faster than Vison for encoding. You might pick that up as well.
