Getting a job in a gaming outlet

Hey people, now I realise this may not be the forum for this thread, but since you people are fellow gamers, I feel it would be more suited to you rather than the chaps on works and jobs.

Well anyway, back to the point, I have tried countless times to get a job in a a store which is involved with gaming(G*a*m**s**p), but it always ends in fail. What is the story does anyone know? My CV. is credible, I have 3 good refs, plus a real interest in computer games.

After all my efforts I have reached the conclusion that, all these stores are essentialy 'closed-shops', with it being virtually impossibe, unless you are very lucky to get a job in one of these outlets.

Like, it is hard to comprehend how much I desire to work in one of these outlets, yet fail miserbaly. I pray that by this Christmas I will be working in one of them.

This mightn't be of much use to you, but Game in Galway are (or were...) looking for temporary christmas staff. So the situation might be the same in other Game stores.
Aiming for a temporary position like that might not be the worst idea, at least you'll be able to put that on your cv and may get a more relevant referee for future applications.

Cool.thanks for that. I'm working in a Spar at the moment, and by God is it boring. I want to be asked questions, like what did you think of this game, not where the milk is located.

Yes that would be a desirable job for anyone interested in games. Do you want to head up to Cavan??? 2 hour drive, 1 hour if the Green Party shut up... :D

BTW, Manchester United 7 Roma 1 :) (just saw your sig).

I agree with agent smith and Nailz stick that in the soccer forum, or are you banned from there.

I'm sure any job gets boring after a while. There's nothing interesting about stocking shelves and sweeping floors in a game shop if that's what your manager orders you to do.
It's a minimum wage shop assistant job after all at the lower levels.

Not putting any gaming staff down, I've spent plently of time in minimum wage jobs too during college.

Just seems to me that the OP is going to be disappointed when if he gets a job.

Ah maybe it is better if he doesn't get the job, don't mean anything bad by that. But if you want to get it, and you do and it's what you've always wanted to do. What will you do when you get it, will you want somethin else, or will there be a bit of disapointment there?

the stress, pain and stupid amount of work required of you in retail outlets that sell items like games, dvds, cds etc. is not worth the minimum wage by any means.

i know looking in from the outside you're thinking how cool it is to work with games you love etc., but when it boils down to it you only remember the 12 absolute scumbags you dealt with who tried to rob the shop floor of its empty cases and then asked you how much they can get for fifa 02 trade in.

i know you really want the job, i wanted the same. then i got into that part of the retail world, and as soon as i could get out i did. office job ftw.

i have a low tolerance for ignorance.

Gamestop takes on folk as required, I know a lot of folk, especially in the Santry store and they certainly aren't "closed shops".
Now I know there is a certain amount of cross pollination as staff move from one shop to another, and if they know someone who they feel would be good in a given post their recommendation does go a certain way to getting them a job, but there are plenty of staff that got jobs on gamestop with no connection to anyone already there, except, perhaps that they have time served as workexperience and managed not to be a complete cabbage!

Best time, as already mentioned, is to apply for a temporary post for the christmas season, then see how you go after that.

I loved my time working on Gamesworld, I got to meet plenty of ignorant customers, sure, and not all wearing shellsuits and starting conversations with "Story Bud!", no quite a few wore suits and smart dresses and made life quite hard.
That said it was great fun a lot of the time, it was nice to have a job where I could talk about my favourite subject with fear of being told to shut up and its nice to help folk. Back then the PS1 was fresh on the market and a lot of ordinary people became aware of gaming goodness for the first time, it was gratifying to have a person leave the store with the best machine and games and having bought it at a good price.
Of course now, well, the playstation is ubiquitous, its penetrated every household to some extent, PS2s, DSs, PSPs etc, people know what they want and want it now, perhaps its no longer the new entertainment frontier it was in the mid ninties, maybe its lost that joy and been replaced by a boring workaday job, how sad....

Go for the Christmas temping jobs that will definitely come up in game shops, as well as other places that have games sections - e.g. music retailers, toy shops, Easons. Maybe some department stores?
HMV Grafton Street has an ad up for Christmas temps.
Maybe you need to put more info on your cv, as you have the retail experience and the gaming knowledge. Don't see why you wouldn't get at least an interview.

Darn straight. My dream was to work in a music shop - I had such ridiculous romantic notions that I'd be standing around talking about music and film all day . But to be fair, while these jobs can be ****ty if you're full-time, they're ideal as part-time work. I worked in the Virgin Megastore as a Christmas temp during college and it was great fun. When I left college the following summer I got my first full-time job in HMV. After five months in that wonderful place  I skedaddled for a Monday-to-Friday office job - best. decision. ever.
These jobs are a novelty at the start, and you do get to work with some great people - the social life is brilliant. After a while though, this starts to get really dull if you've nothing else going on in your life. Plus, retail is a tough area and some managers can be assholes.
I know, I know, the same can be said for an office job, but at least you get out of the office at a reasonable hour, have weekends off... oh yeah, and you get paid better money! Plus there are far more career prospects.

Working in a Game shop is just like any other job. Boring. Don't see why people get so excited about it (I was like that when I started, but then the customers start to come in!)

I worked in Gamestop in Henry St part-time and it was the best job I ever had, I loved the place. Gamestop are a great company to work for (pay excepted...) and there's plenty of perks.

Don't hand a CV in to the counter-jockeys though, post it off to Head Office and follow it up with a phone call.
