Lockers!!!

This comes up every year but I was unable to find it on the search on baords, found it through Google though.

Just a quick question! All I can find regarding dates + times is:

"College operates a system whereby you can rent a locker for the academic year. Lockers are located in the Arts Building, the Hamilton Building, Luce Hall and the Physics Department. You pay a small annual fee and a returnable deposit. However, there are not nearly as many lockers as there are students, so demand is high. Lockers are allocated on a first come-first served basis; application forms are available from the Arts Building security desk on the first day of term."

First day of term is... first day of lectures, as in 8th of Oct or do they mean week 1 which was a while back now....

first week of lectures. be sure to get there mad early if ya want a big locker. myself and a friend of mine went in at about 06.30 last year...and there was a queue! but we were rewarded with massive lockers in the arts block. OH! be sure to read the page you gotta fill out when getting the locker, if you tick a box, you get it for 2 years for the same price!! loads of people miss it.:D

This is a bit of silly fresher's question...but do I need a locker? I'm starting History and Political Science and I have no idea how many books or whatever I'll have- does anyone know? Will I have to buy books or will I just be getting stuff form the library? Is it like school where you have about 10,000 books?

I don't wanna not get one and find that I need one, but I also don't wanna get one and find that I don't need it when someone who actually does need it missed out!:confused::confused:

    Thanks! :)

Well I'm guessing, as with most courses, you'll be getting most of your books from the library, there may be some recommended texts to buy, but there's definitely not as many books as there was for the l.c.
If you manage to snag a big locker, you could always use it for your gym bag, if you're gonna be using the sports centre that is...

Lockers are always, always, always useful, be it for books, clothes or an emergency naggin. For the sake of one morning of hell, you can get an incredibly handy locker (mine's visible from the ramp - class!) that you get to keep for as many years as you like (you just have to talk to the campus supernintendo around May and he'll hold it for you for the following year); there's bound to be some time in the next year when you'll need to leave a bag or some books in college overnight and will need a safe place to put them.

Last year it was 15 euro and then a 15 euro deposit on top of that...

I got one last year and may have ticked the two year lease thing (no idea whether I did - I've still got the key an' all though...) Does anyone whether I can just stroll in on the Monday (afternoon) and have the locker waiting or am I getting *sigh* the first luas?

    Taylor Durden and Shay_562,

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I see what you mean, it would be handy to have one, I think I'll get one! :)

Buses only start at 6:30 for me... ah the good days of waiting in line on a cold frosty day :)

Where do we actually go to get them?

Arts Block. You'll see the queues. If you don't care about getting a locker go in sometime in the next year. They'll still have some down in the East End. The handy thing too is that the East End is 24 hours, which can be handy. Did I mention it was handy?

I do that course. You're told at the start of the year to buy a few books - they're big feckers too - but don't bother. They cost €30-€60 each and you almost never use them, until exams come around. Then they're in the library and (surprisingly) I had little trouble finding copies even very close to exam time. So don't get a locker for the sake of books, though it might be useful for storing clothes/drink etc. In short, if you're living in town, don't bother. If you're not, it's probably a good idea to get one.

Lockers can be very useful as Shay pointed out. I had a locker in first year but not last and found it annoying. It comes in handy even if you don't have many books, you lokcer can come in handy for keeping a pair of shoes for going out at night if your stuck in the Library for some un-godly reason!

Note for First Years: There's a free cloack/bag room where you can leave your bags/coats/umbella/laptops - whatever - for free. this service operates between 8ish a.m. (Don't know what time it opens) till about 10 p.m. You can leave you stuff there over night but it costs about 2.50 per night (also note this isn't a charge as such, its a fine!!)

Where is the East End- is it just a part of the Arts Block? That's one of about three buildings I know for sure!! :( Sounds good and the whole 24-hour thing does sound handy ;)

What's the story with renewing lockers?

    Ah, Freshers.

    tcd_tiles.gif

The East End refers to the east end of College, "the Science end". Arts Block is not 24 hours.

What's the story if I had a locker last year and never renewed it (out of stupidity and laziness), there was a few things in there such as a vinyl which didn't belong to me...

My stuff is well gone out of that locker isn't it?
I want to keep it but it's too late isn't it... I still have the key..

    I'm so stupid, crap! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

It might be in the lost and found. Ask the superintendent. Don't get your hopes up though :(.

Thanks for your help... do they keep all the locker stuff together by number, or just throw it all in lost and found...
I am getting my hopes up for a lot of things...shiiit
So there is no way I can keep the locker for this year then?
Is there any way of getting the deposit back?

Nope, your deposit is forfeit and the lock has been changed. I neglected to leave back the key in time (June I believe this is defined as) three years in a row. Thus costing me a total of €45 through my own negligence. You just have to queue up early next Monday morning and get a new one. 7:40am I believe was the hour I'd turn up in order to get a good locker and not have to queue for long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

Is it possible to get two keys for a locker so it can be shared between two people?
Or do you just bring your own lock?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 264 ✭✭Sawa

    Oh I feel stupid now...
Ok, I'm not going to be there that early... I don't mind having a locker anywhere as long as it's in the arts block. So say you were in the line at 11am, would there still be some in the arts block?

    mathew wrote:

Just get the key cut. The nearest place I can think of is on Dame street near the *******.

Wait, so what's the difference between an Arts Block locker and an East End one?(apart from location)

There are the bigger sized ones in the Arts Block (double normal size) which usually are the first to go. You've to get in very early to get one of those. East-end lockers (including the Panoz Institute, which is in the 'Hamilton Building' just in case your told that there are lockers free there) are 24 hours, if you can get on campus 24 hours. It's also closer to the Pav should you, um, require the need to use it as a drinks cabinet.

But as for size-wise, or anything else, there's no difference. Well, as far as you can tell. I've never gone so far as having measured the yokes. But it's probably best to go for a locker near where most of your lectures will be.

I see, and do the East End lockers get taken as quickly as Arts Block ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

Not usually as far as I remember. I was in there at about 9.30am - 10am on the first day of term last year and there were plenty left in the East End. I know a couple of people who went to get a locker later on in that week and still got East End ones, so going on last year, they do not go quickly.

I got a locker in January for the East End. I don't think they ever 'sell out' for the East End. Even though the locker is €30 mind, half of that is a deposit which you should get back in June... if you remember.

My memory fails me...I asked the supernintendo to hold my locker for me, but did I have to go back to him and pay €15 again before this Monday, or do I have another while to do it?

You have a week or so from Monday. Just pop in when there isn't a much of line.

Got my locker this morning. There was still stuff in it from the previous year, so it doesn't appear that they are dumped out. If I were you, (this to the guy who has given up all hope for his stuff) I would hang around your old locker at prominent times of day (i.e lunchtime) and ask the person if you can retrieve your stuff....
I sent an email to whoever it is has my locker, but MYZONE DOES NOT WORK ON THE COLLEGE NETWORK? It would appear that the safari/firefox proxies haven't been set up yet. tsktsk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

I'm using myzone on firefox in Trinity right now...

Got my locker too - prime location in Arts Block but not a large one grrrr...

What was all this talk of having to queue early about? I got a very convenient one for me in the Lloyd Building and only had to queue for about 5 minutes at about 11.15. There were also ones left in the Arts Block at this time(albeit on the 5th floor)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭lilmizzme

Damn they were long queues today!! I couldnt drag myself out of my leaba early enough to get one though...think Im just goiing to have to bribe my friend into letting me use hers.... :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

Got myself an absolute beaut this morning. Big one in the arts block. Location isn't the May West though, 4th floor of all places. The only reason I've ever been up there is to quit French and I never went back.

Next year I might camp out and try to get one of those gems next to the Lecky entrance.

The queues are really there for the Arts End (the big ones especially), and as mentioned below the other lockers don't run out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 264 ✭✭Sawa

Didn't get there til 1 because of lectures and all that was left was Pharmacy building and Lloyd building. I took the Lloyd one, does anyone know if that building is 24 hour access, like swipe with your student card?

The chances of someone giving me back my Shins vinyl is sooo slim but I'll try.

Lloyd isn't 24 hours as far as I know. Museum, Hamilton, and a few others are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

Just to inform people who may not be aware, if a locker is in "the Pharmacy building", "the East End" or "the Panoz Institute" (all of which are in fact the same place), it is actually inside what is generally known as the Hamilton building, so you will have 24 hour access to it there. Thought this should be emphasised as whoever is handing out the forms for lockers doesn't seem to be doing so.

Also when does Nassau street entrance close? (Seems like around 10ish to me...)

Officially at about 2100. All depends on which security person is on, some of them are sounder about people being around later than that.
