Hi all, i am recently back from a trip to Africa. I have uploaded a flickr set with 50 of my favourite photos. Feel free to comment on the photos in flickr, or comment on them here. They would be too big to put in here, so you can view them on the flickr set here:

    Thanks in advance!

Some very nice photos. Particularly 'Kid' and 'Smile' stood out for me. Some I saw what you were getting at, and were nicele poetic.

Just wondering what you were doing there? A holiday? Volunteering?

I'm very interested in how you captured these places in Uganda, part of my work right now involved studying photographic representations of the developing world.

    Good stuff.

What a set! Just sat through it as a wee slideshow and it really takes you there.

    A few favourites:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddiemackle/1459488500/ - a portraot without even showing a face - quite a feat...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddiemackle/1459778746/ - hauntingly beautiful. Very honest - candid at its best I think.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddiemackle/1458920015/ - I dunno, it just does it for me :)

On the last one, I know what you mean. But part of me also feels it's a little intrusive. Or it could be without more context. It's certainly a very sublime shot. I just hope that the sitter was happy with the photographer entering his private space, or whether it was a matter of snapping and moving on.

Though I get the impression the photographer spent some time in the commnity.

Photography of the developing world is a tricky business. Do we apply the same standards to there as we do at home? Stereotypes, and unjust power-relations can be reproduced by photographs. It's a fascinating area of study where the minutest details like background detail, cropping and angle of view can imply all kinds of different things.

Most of these photos are just great, though. I just wish the captions had more detail so I could learn more about the people in them. By way of example, the second link there.

Brilliant set.. came across it and commented on flickr before noticing this thread :) "Holding Hands" is my favourite, cliched shot perhaps but still wonderful.

Wow - i really did not expect such a good response. I really appreciate all the comments!

In answer to some of the questions:

Dadakoph: I was actually on a holiday out there, although on 2 previous occasions I have volunteered out there for summers. As a result I have a quite a few friends out there. We travelled around various villages where quite a lot of my photos were taken. People in Uganda are very receptive to having they photo taken, and are happy to let you into and see their way of life. I have had no problem taking photos out there, and have been able to take ones that I would not be able to take in Ireland.

There is a fine line to take when taking photos of people out there, but their feelings on it mostly depend on the culture. I would not go and take the same photos in Kenya etc - as the people may not be as receptive etc. I will add a description to some of the photos, to help give better insight.

Takesi, eleven, kensutz and kali: thats a mill for the comments!

This is a really good set. Some great shots in there.

Do you have more landscape photos? Shots of the African plains are usually pretty amazing.
