Are you able to buy from the US apple store instead of uk and ireland? I need a new battery for my ibook, it's €130 in the irish store and $130 in the US.

Is there anywhere better i could get a battery?

If you buy from the US store it can only ship to a US address. Even if you know someone who they can ship to, you still have to deal with the issue of getting it over here and past customs.

Have you searched around, ebay etc?

what about transferring the warranty from us to here for software udpates?
are they as strict as MS for updates etc..?

another spanner in the works is that the US apple online store will only accept payment from accounts registered in the US. i tried to pay for something online with them and have it shipped to a friend but no luck.

so it's eBay etc... or get a friend to pay for it and owe them the money as well!!

Your support will be fine so don't worry about it. Regardless of how you pay for any product abroad, you will be liable for duty if stopped by Customs.

Support and warrenty will be fine on Apple laptops as there worldwide, you can even buy the extended warrenty and it'll be fine to reg it to a Irish address.

I bought my MacBook in Las Vegas back in May and had no issues getting it back to Ireland, I couldn't even see any customs people.

I did however take pre-cautions, I brought a laptop bag with me when I went to the states, I also brought software on a USB stick that I could install.

I dumped the box in my hotel and stuck all the manuals etc in my store luggage and then stuck the power cable and normal stuff along with the macbook in my laptop bag.

Maybe abit paranoid but better safe then sorry :D

He'd be liable for customs whether or not he gets stopped. It would just make it more difficult not to pay;)

All apple portables have a worldwide warrenty so no worries!

and what about software updates, everything updates fine?
    no american / european issues?

No issues. You can change all setting to Irish if you want but the keyboard will still stay the same shape! Though I actually prefer the american shape and location fo the @ symbol on the 2 and the " on the ' key. Smaller return is nicer looking too and you (I) end up using the enter key on the bottom anyway so a non issue as regards functionality (for me anyway).

Go for it. Only thing is plug is two pin but i just cut it off and put on Irish plug. Think I will do this again for a european plug as I've moved. Os and other softwarewise everythings the same though so no worries.

For batteries, there are often better third party replacements. I got an extended life (4 hours, compared to 2 hours) battery for my PowerBook a while back from a 3rd party supplier for cheaper than the standard Apple one, and it looked almost identical and worked perfectly.

is that not the way they all are?? i bought my macbook from the irish apple online store and it has the @ key above 2.... and the " key above '....

although my return key is the "proper" european shape

Oh maybe they are, just assumed it was cause it was "American". My bad.

All mac keyboards (US/UK/Ireland anyway) have the @ over the number 2.

I find the enter key really annoying on the US version. Although I think if you can call apple direct in the US they can put a UK/Irish keyboard on the MacBook, but it will take an extra week or so.
