Second hand Macbook - scratched screen

    Hi guys,

This is pretty much a repeat of my post over at the Laptop forum but I thought I'd try get Mac users' take on this.

I'm thinking of selling my Macbook and getting a new one cheaply in the states. According to Mac2Sell, it's worth €720, but the thing is there's a few small scratches on the screen (from the keyboard - I really should have bought a protector!) There's about 5 or 6, each about a millimetre or two long. They're not hugely noticeable except in strong light or against white backgrounds.

Just looking for a rough idea how much this would knock off the value?

I'll try get pictures up later if that's any help.

It's a 1.83 Ghz Core Duo White Macbook, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, combo drive. 1 year old.

Just in case anyone wants to know what has already been said before posting.

Sorry, I should really have included that! I'd still appreciate any Mac users' opinions on this, we seem to care a bit more about what our machines look like than your typical Thinkpad user :p

No worries, I just thought of it when I was posting to the other one. I feel like a traitor having posted my opinion there and not here hehe :)

    Not on the screen, no.
Not for me or anybody else I've ever known anyway.

Imho scratches on the screen would make a difference to the price alright.

I know I certainly would not want to buy one with a scratched screen.

I'm curious about these scratches, there are no sharp edges on a keyboard? The worst damage I could see naturally occuring is some imprinting of the keys on the screen.

To me, personally, the descripton sounds like they are minor and would not put me off. Its all personal taste when it comes to that. And up to the buyer to decide if they are happy. I wouldnt knock a huge amount off like I said... but if it was a problem for the potential buyer then you could negotiate.

Well I'm pretty sure they're from the keyboard, I'm very careful about not touching the screen and I always leave it closed when I'm not using it.

Anyway, thanks for the opinions guys. I've found a buyer at €700 - a family member needs a new laptop and couldn't care less about the scratches, says she's too blind to see them anyway :p

Screen and/or keyboard protectors next time anyway :D

On my Powerbook there's a tiny mark in the screen on the bottom left - looks like a 3mm long hair behind the screen surface - and it bugs me when it's visible so I use a photo as the wallpaper with lots of detail to hide it. When an app un covers it though it distracts a little.

IMO I'd be very reluctant to buy something with a defect like this again. That said I got the Powerbook for a song so I'll live with it.

So you mentioned Apple over on the Laptops forum eh . . . when will your ban be lifted then ? ;)
