...and I was promptly told to hop back out by the driver. A little shocked and bemused, I did as I was asked. When I was back on the pavement he says, "Where ya goin luv?" I told him where and he says, "Nah sorry no can do not worth me while..." I stood there for a few seconds like :O Anyways, I argued that he had to take me as he was at a rank and he basically told me to **** off. So I noted his number and I intend on reporting him.

The rank was the rank outside the Guinness Hopstore and the two cars in front of him just for three Americans a piece, the prick was obviously think $$$

Damnnit I should have stood my ground and demanded, but to be honest I wouldn't want to give him my money after that.

Me I'm Spook_ie, don't take offence it's just in reality a lot of people will spout off about taxi drivers ripping them off or whatever BUT the majority will not bother to actualy officialy complain and until you ( the public ) do that it will never improve

    Where were you going?

One of your rights taken from TaxiRegulator.ie:
    Not be unreasonably refused service with a 30km radius of the pick up point/point of hire;

So unless you were going pretty far, or were puking all over yourself when you got in, you should complain.

The taxi driver was being a cúnt. There's no harm in recounting your experiences on Boards. Anyone who says "stop complaining here, do something about it, bla bla" is obviously just in the humour to find fault with things.

And if I hear another taxi-driver remark "there's more than enough taxis in this city" after I've spent two hours freezing my ass off on Dame Street on a Friday night, I'll also let rip.

Where do you start with that one?

One St Stephens day about 2 years ago, a taxi driver gave me the very intimate details of his sex life. You'd be suprised how good their vocabulary can be when they are describing sex acts. He started like this:

HIM: I was sittin at home der and the tele is bleedin sh*te, so i sez to the mot, gis a ride. She told me to f*ck off, she's watching Coronation Steet. So i sez, i may as well go out and bleedin work then........and here i am, yor me first fare.

ME: Thats eh............yeah. I'm going to Dundrum by the way.

Thats just one story i can recount.

No there is no harm mouthing off in here as long as you have the willingness to complain officialy, or would it be that you are just the complaining type that would make a good ( old style ) taxi driver :D

There is, same as there are some people who post on here who wouldn't piss on a taxi driver if he was on fire. However taxi drivers don't ( in general ) have a regulatory office that they can complain to about the public where as you do. So use it

Some people prefer to vent their frustrations on Boards.ie

It's just something that you'll have to get used to.

For example, there is a person complaining about a Spar manager asking him about the price of sandwiches. Maybe instead of posting here he should complain to Spar. Perhaps, but who cares tbh.

Now, here's my rant about a taxi driver who wasn't Irish.

I wanted to go from O'Connell Street to Coolock.

He drove out of town via Summerhill, over Luke Kelly Bridge there in Ballybough, turned up the Richmond Road, and onto the Drumcondra Road, executed an illegal right turn and headed towards Whitehall, when he got to Whitehall he went on and turned onto the overpass into Santry/Beaumont, into Artane, so I directed him to Coolock Garda station for taking the piss, and then the Gardaí told ME to eff off.

I ended up paying over twenty quid for a fifteen quid fare.

That bastard taxi man and the bastard Garda can rot in hell.

And the point is that you

    3 follow it through

You dont and the next time he gets away with it again and again and again

Once you're sat in the seat of a taxi, they are obliged to take you to your destination (within reason).
That's the reason he asked you to step out of the taxi.
He doesn't have to take you just because he's at the rank, and he does actually have a right to refuse a fare, but only once you haven't got in the taxi. It's then seen as both parties have entered into the contract.
A taxi driver told me the above...

he doesn't have a right to refuse the fair once the destination is within 30k and the taxi is on duty. It was actually pointed out today by the chairman of the taxi drivers federation that they have no alternative but to accept passengers. See page 13 of the times.

    You wrong.

The driver can refuse a dirty person, an aggressive person, a drunk person or a person likely to cause annoyance.

A copy of the S.P.V.S. rules & regulations can be purchased at the government publications off on Molesworth St. (opposite corner from the passport office) for €7:50.

Weather or not the driver in the OP's case acted outside of those regulations is not for us to decide, however it was very bad practice and I think we can all agree on that.

well I'm not really, there is a get out of having a valid reason, eg they weren't on duty or the fare was falling over drunk as you say but outside of this the driver can't refuse a fair for no good reason. Although I am sure everyone has experience of them doing exactly that.

Based on the OPs description there is absolutely no way the driver could make a case there was valid reason and hopefully a complaint will see him prosecuted.

Btw, the regulators office has legal power's and the accussed driver has every right to have his accuser cross examined. The OP will be made aware of this by the regulators office.

Asshole taxi-driver all right. But maybe he doesn't know the route well? Although given his extensive knowledge of the long way round, it seems unlikely.
I got a taxi from O'Connell Street to DCU one evening. The most straightforward routes are either left onto Parnell Street and up through Phibsborough etc, or up to Dorset Street and through Drumcondra, then left at Griffith Avenue. But this guy practically went over to Fairview, then back towards town. I queried him and he said "oh this is the most direct route". I replied "don't let the Cork accent fool you, I'm a student in DCU so I think I should know the route." He obviously presumed, because of my bags (I'd just got off the bus from a few days at home) that I was only visiting.
    Such an asshole.

absolutely, it is only fair and I can see it would be hard to prove any case when it is he said she said. However presumably complaints building up would go against any driver..
